Does your employer hold W2's until Jan 31?

I started with a new company this Jan., but I've noticed the accountant is holding W2's. If someone, past or present employee, asks for their's she will give it to them. But she is not handing the rest out or mailing the former employee's yet.

I worked for a CPA several years ago and he would hold all W2's for current employees until 4:59 on Jan 31st. I did the mail and would mail the former employees' W2's so I know they were done at the beginning of Jan. I know he did it because he was a jerk, but is there any other reason why they would hold it? What does your company do?

I did the W2's for another company I worked for and I always got them out asap b/c I didn't want people to bother me for them or sitting on my desk.

I got mine a couple of weeks ago too (I work for a State-affiliated University).

I don't see why a company would intentially delay them. You have to figure that people would bug them about it, and it doesn't benefit them to delay. However, the speed at which the paperwork moves can vary from place to place. I've worked other places where I don't remember getting them until Feb. No dickishness ... just slow.

I don't know why someone would hold them.... there's really no value unless they're looking at the time value of money that would otherwise be spent on stamps.

I mail them the same day they come from the accountant. Of course, that still doesn't stop people from calling me on January 2nd asking for them (they went out on January 19th FWIW).

I got mine on the 19th as well. I don't understand why a company would hold them back.

I already filed my federal return online -- in fact, I just got the refund in my bank account yesterday ... YEEEE HAAAAAAA!

I do my federal return using the last paycheck of the year. I wait for my W-2s before I do the state returns for Kansas and Missouri because I can't file them online for free, so I need the W-2.

Where I work, nobody gets theirs until the 31st, which is bullshit. I don't know why they do this...

If you think late arrival of W-2's causes problems, just wait till you get amended 1099-DIV and 1099-INT statements from your financial investment company. I just read an article that the Wachovia Securities could mail out amended 1099 statements as late as March 2007, which can cause all kinds of problems for early filers! (Hello amended returns.... )

For the first time in the 11 years that I've worked there, my company actually handed out W2's with this week's paycheck as opposed to mailing them out.

My company just did this also. For the life of me I can't figure out why they never did this. Seemed like a waste to mail them.

Isn't that illegal? ... unless of course the post date is January 31.

Well, in my company, the Payroll Supervisor (part of HR, not accounting) handles the W-2. She looks over every single W-2 to check for accuracy. She just finished on Thursday and mailed them out on Friday (1/26).

I couldn't agree more. Not to mention the possibility of getting lost in the mail etc. Some years back, a roomate and I never got our W2's. We're not sure if they were lost in the mail or stolen but it was quite a production to get duplicates sent out to us so we could file. This way is just so much easier on so many levels.

It was announced this year that all W2's would be held until Jan 31.

In 10 years there, this is the first time this has happened.

My wife and I have all of ours except for the one from my per diem job. It's really annoying to have to wait on that place, when I only work there about 3-4 shifts a month. But they ALWAYS wait until the 31st.

The only reason I can think of to hold them would be to wait and see if any of the info has changed. Of course I can't think of why it would but I'm sure the hassle/process of sending out a replacement W2 makes it worth waiting to make sure they are accurate. This is also a good reason NOT to file your taxes too early, unless you are sure you have everything, the hassle of sending in an amended return because of that forgotten about interest statement (or as happened to me one year, the letter from one a company I deal w/ that turned out to have tax implications that I hadn't considered ) is a PITA.
