What's the best excuse to tell a professor of why I was late for a final?

Long story short, I showed up late, she told me I couldn't take it and I have to come see her tomorrow during her office hours and I "better have a good excuse".

I need seriously, around 35 points to get a C in the class, this final is worth 150.

So. IT's one of these 2.

1. I have 2 finals tomorrrrow and that one today. I will tell her that I was studying for all 3 of them and lost track of time.

2. Since I live off campus, my car broke down and I had to get it jumped.

1 or 2?

Ha, I would really appreciate serious answers from you guys though especially since you're older and would have more experience with this. Like would she appreciate the more "honest" looking answer in that I was caught up studying or would the more outlandish and predictable lie of "my car broke down" work betteR?

The truth was, I was helping a friend pack up her car to head home. I've been late to finals before and it was never a big deal to anyone. This lady usually has things up saying "no one can leave before (insert certain time). So knowing all of that I wasn't really in a hurry.

I say go with the truth.
And learn your lesson.

Because... excuses won't help you in the real working world!!!

That has been beat into my head since I was 16 yrs old.... Now that I'm older.. I believe it.

Okay, you want a serious answer? She doesn't have to do shit for you, but you can make her want to. Excuse number 1 isn't going to do it; it paints you as irresponsible.

But, wouldn't me saying "i based it off the fact that you don't usualy let peopple out early"

Wouldn't she take offense to that? And be like "don't try to blame this on me"?

Isn't taking the full blame for all of it the best thing to do?

Seriously, they've heard the car thing a billion times. Just tell them you were late and apologize for it.

Knowing the importance of the situation and her bitchiness you should have been on time.

Yes, you should take full blame and not expect her to do anything for you.
You screwed up. Now, own up to it and tell her that and see what happens.
She may surprise you... she's probably sick of hearing all the outragous excuses and might welcome a look in the eye and the truth.

Yeh, I think I'll go with number 1. Just because she said it better be a good excuse. I don't thinks he'd take helping a friend move as a good excuse. So Illl just say I was studying for finals and lost track of time, and then immediately admit that it's my fault, I messed up, and I should have been more responsible.

No, go for the breasts. Stare at her breasts. She'll be flattered.

Play the sympathy card and tell her a D would ruin your life, but you've learned from your mistakes.

Next time, tell your friend that you have to leave because you have a FINAL & get there on time! Most everyone knows the importance of passing your final, so the friend should understand.

Above all, learn the importance of being on time as it will be pretty important if/when you get your degree and are employed. Employers don't take kindly to habitual lateness or excuses.

As for the "excuse" I'd choose:

"I was going to come up with a fictitious excuse for my tardiness and thought about many different ones, before I decided that telling you the truth was really the best thing to do. I made a bad decision that made me late for my scheduled test. I hope you'll allow me to take my final as I really want to pass your class."

Tell them that you drive the 'tard wagon, and one of 'em got their head stuck in the window, and you had to pry it out. By the time you finished, the kids got loose and you had to do some 'tard wrangling......while roping the last one, you saw your watch......and you realied you were late for your final.

Sorry...I just watched, "The Aristocrats", so must everything seems fair game.

i dunno, most professors i know won't accept any excuse for missing a final unless it was REALLY serious and even then it can be difficult because many times, they aren't willing to accomodate you because they already have enough to deal with themselves.

diarrhea might work if it was 5-10 mins late but you should have said that at the time.

if all else fails, beg beg beg.
i remember way back when i was a freshmen, i had a history final (1st college final ever) at 730am on monday. i overslept and woke up at exactly 730am, but i ran across campus (living in a dorm really had its advantages) so was about 5 mins late and caught a break because it was still dark and raining so hard. did well on that final and got a b, but man, that was a close one, i totally learned my lesson and showed up 25 mins early for every final ever since.
