I'm being eaten alive. (BED BUGS)

Ugh. I had the unfortunate experience of spending the weekend in an old house infested with bed bugs. I thought I made it out with just a few (all over the arms and legs) bites, but I think some came home with me. I think I am getting new bites, but I am not sure. I want to go for a pre-emptive strike. So, besides nuking the apartment from orbit, is there something I can do now?

I am planning on isolating contaminated furniture in the middle of the apartment -- I live in a loft -- and washing everything I've come into contact since I got back. I want to pick up some pesticides, too, but I don't know which one.

Recommendations? Or, should I just call the professionals?

No need for pesticides. Simply wash your sheets, mattress liner, etc in very HOT water. Vaccum the mattress. If you can lay it in the sun for a bit, great. You may need to get a new mattress.

Then thoroughly clean your room. Wash any clothes on the floor in HOT water.

I would not go overboard with the extermination unless the bugs are still around a few days after you did all this.

Fuck the environment, break out the DDT. Only the dusty countries should have these problems.

Invite the people whose home you stayed in to come visit you and give them your bed. Tell them you've really been ITCHING to see them.

Circle the bites you have on your skin right now, and tomorrow check for more. I would do this first, before you get a new mattress, clean everything, etc...

Didn't your parents tell you "Don't let the bed bugs Bite"? You should have listened.

I think it's going to take more then washing and vacuming. They get in your walls and hide in cracks all over the room. Short of burning your house down or finding a supply of DDT you might just have to do the vacuming of the mattress and washing everything down every week or so to keep them under control.

Provent-a-mite is used in the Reptile hobby for well, mites. You spray a little and it kills insects and spiders for about a month.

Looks like I was prescient- I have bed bugs.

Discovered a dead one Sunday morning. Checked my bed, found black marks that are droppings at the foot of the bed on the sheets, as well as one crawling around.

Returned Monday after buying new sheets, new pillows, a mattress encasement, and laundry supplies to discover three more on my box spring. Spent three hours yesterday at the laundromat washing and drying a lot of stuff on the hottest setting, then placing into huge Ziplock bags.

Exterminator comes tomorrow, and I plan on visiting all my neighbors tonight to tell them. They are very hard to eradicate from a building... and I get to go to bed tonight knowing I will have bugs crawling on me as I sleep.

Nightmare stuff man, get really drunk and stuff like bugs will pull a 'red sails in the sunset' and you'll sleep.

Way to stick to your guns and go DDT on their ass.

Re: I'm being eaten alive. (BED BUGS)

Are you positive it's bed bugs?
Sounds like it could also be fleas. We had a bout with them last year, and it was a bitch.

Try this to see (we did it, and bizarre as it sounds, it works):
At night, before you go to bed leave out a shallow bowl of water with just a couple of drops of dishsoap in it.
Set it on the floor in a room you suspect is infested.
Set a lamp (preferably one of those small desk lamps) next to the bowl and turn it on.
Fleas will jump toward the light/warmth, and land in the water. The dishsoap fucks with the surface tension of the water, and the fleas will drown.

There's no way I could sleep in a bed with bugs.

I have no doubt it won't be enjoyable, but it's necessary. I live in a smallish 6-unit walk-up and if the whole building isn't inspected, they'll just come back.

Oh yeah, it's bed bugs. I've captured four of them, and what I have a) looks exactly like all the pictures of bed bugs I've found online and b) looks nothing like a flea. I wish I had fleas. Fleas are easier to deal with.

It was disgusting- the fitted sheet was literally black from their droppings. I have no idea how I missed it when I shook out the top sheet every day.

From what I've read, both are a pain to control/eradicate.
Good luck - I guess my flea-killing secrets will have to wait for another time...

How often do you wash your sheets? I wash mine weekly and I assume most people do, right? I hope I would notice before the sheet became "black from their droppings." Ugh.
