any cooks/chefs?

I just bought a Shun 8 inch chef knife and need a honing steel.
Are there different types of honing steel?
I found some restaurant wholesale stores in NYC's chinatown with good prices on honing steel.
Would any of them work or do I need to pair up the honing steel with a particular knife?

I believe the honing steel would work no matter. However, I wouldn't just go buy something that is no-name in a chinese store. I'm sure anything at a kitchen or professional kitchen supply store would be just fine.

someone told me the material in the honing steel should be harder than the knive. Is this something I need to worry about?

In the long run, I doubt the relative rockwell hardness is going to have much affect on the quality of honing you'd get out of the blade. As long as you're not using some soft, cheap knockoff type steel, you'll be fine. Anything from any quality knife manufacturer should do.
