Cutting small tree branches?

I swear my builder put the damn ugliest tree I've ever seen in my backyard. I really need to prune it up a bit to make it a little more appealing. I don't think any branch is more than 2'' in diameter. Is a simple saw cutting near the trunk good enough to remove lower branches (these are only about three feet from the ground)? And is it okay to cut a branch in the middle that is jutting out longer than the others? I know it will be easy to chop 'em off, but I'm concerned about the health of the tree more than anything.

should be fine.

when shortening branches, not removing them, cut them just above a spot where there is new growth.

example: there is the main branch, then some offshoots, usually every few feet depending on the tree size. just above the offshoot closest to where you want to trim it back to, cut it.

i dont know if i am making sense or how i could.

Corona, maker of garden tools, has a pretty handy guide to the Principles of Pruning.

JustinS has some really good info on tree cutting.

How big are the trees?

And just pick up a pruning saw:

and some pruning spray (don't have a picture of it, is just sprayable black tar). Cut the lower branches flush with the tree and then, if you have the spray, spray the fresh cut. Though wait until springtime (when the buds first start appearing, or a little before).

Personally, I cut all of my trees such that I can walk under them without hitting my head on branches. With the pruning saw I pointed out, you'll slice through 2" branches like a hot knife through butter.
