I'm allergic to BEER!!! Oh no! :(

I go through periods of time where I don't drink any alcohol/beer for a couple of months. A 12 pack could last me a month easily. I never drink to get drunk (grew out of that desire many years ago). I do get a hankering for a good beer every once in a while and indulge.

Well, I went about 4 months without drinking anything and low & behold, I drink a beer and have an allergic reaction!

I chalked this up to drinking a German beer that I've not had in years. I then tried a Sam Adams a week later and same result! A few days after that.. I drink a Bud Light & again, it happens! I've tried several different brands and have had the same result each time... Hot feeling in my neck & face, followed by itching and redness in the neck area.

Kicker is.. my brother-in-law works for Anheuser Busch and gives me free beer when I go to visit. I called him and he said that it was probably the hops that I was allergic to. He said that there were guys at the plant who developed allergies to hops after years of working around them. He also offered to take me to the lab at the plant next time I visit and get them to run a couple of tests.

Anyone else here have a beer allergy? I never wanted a beer more than now that I shouldn't drink one!

Are you sure you don't have the cause and effect reversed?

Do you have any other allergy issues when you eat anything with wheat, barley or malt?

I can't drink beer either, but I have a wheat allergy? You could have a disease called Celiac Sprue. I think you should be tested. But, that is just me.

That must really suck (though I am more of a vodka girl in terms of drinking.). I had a coworker who had a wheat allergy and had to get special kinds of bread and stuff, so I think if it was wheat or something like that you'd have noticed with other stuff.

I think Whitetigeress is on to something. Maybe you should try rice beer and see if you react in the same way.

Here's a prescription for less beer, more whiskey.

Cheers!

I'm allergic to something in some ales but I don't know what. So I just stay away from those for the most part.

To answer the question do you have any other allergies?

The only other thing that I am allergic to is mushrooms & that's a life/death one.

I have some sort of reaction to beer as well, I'm not sure if it's an allergy or what but when I have a few too many I get really dizzy and then wake up the next day disoriented and with a horrible case of memory loss. Think your brother in law might be able to take me to the factory lab too?

^^

Something in MGD Light makes me physically ill. I've never had it happen with any other beer. I'll have only a couple and feel fuckin' awful and I have no idea why.

Excellent post. It's not often I bust out laughing from the internet, but this did it.

I'm glad I'm not allergic to beer. I enjoy it weekly. One of the things I enjoy is trying out new beers. The only ones that give me a bad reaction are Sam Adams beers. Those cause me to produce the worst farts, absolutely horrid.
