Car automotive help needed

Noticed my exhaust is hanging low in my 99 sunfire. Figured it would be an exhaust clamp or strap or something simple like that. The mechanic said it was the Front Flex Pipe.

Can anyone tell me more about what this actually is? How urgent that I need to replace it? Estimated costs?

I live in Canada and called around a few places and estimates are a couple hundred bucks. My inspection is due this month so I am guessing this will probably fail it.

1) Obtain a metal coat hanger.
2) Crawl under car.
3) Figure out some way to rig up exhaust.

This is a public service message brought to you by the State of Georgia.

That will hold it up fine but with the Flex Pipe coming off, it's going to start leaking fluid according to the mechanic.

What probably happened is you lost your muffler bearings when the tailpipe came loose, causing a leak in your blinker fluid. It's gonna run ya about $3000. I can't legally let you leave with it like that.

You might want to check with another mechanic.

There is no "fluid" in your exhaust, well, maybe a little condensed water vapor until it heats up. However, if it is leaking exhaust gas, that could be dangerous (if it can then get in passenger compartment, it will kill you) and warrant replacement. Generally, that is true of ANY hole in the exhaust system.

What OldDude is saying is very true! So you better not keep your girlfriend locked in the trunk!

i'm guessing it's the flex connection, similar to the one shown here:

i'd suggest you take a look under the car to see if it's actually damaged. you should be able to see if some of the braids are damaged, or if there is excess play in that flex portion.

that looks like it. The rigid piece in the middle is plastic on mine and looks like its ready to fall off. Also, there is like a cross bar pin that has been rusted away which I think is making it hang low.
