What's with the "disrespected me" crap?

When did everyone start going on and on about being disrespected?

The damn "Flavor of Love" show is on VH1 and I all I ever hear is one bitch is disrespecting another bitch.

Lots of dis and disrespecting be goin' on yo and it ain't cool.

I'm sick of this. It's all about respect and lots of people don't be gettin' it.

When did this disrespect crap start becoming prominent? Help this homey understand why it's all that and a bag of chips.

Peace out.

It's like when a baseball play who claims that "It's not about the money, it's about respect" doesn't feel "respected" unless he's getting paid more than anyone else in baseball. So the "disrespect" in this case is not enough cash. So I think it means all sorts of different things to different people.

I've wondered this as well. People (particularly urban Blacks that I see on TV or in the NBA) seem obsessed with not being disrespected. Why does it matter so much to them if someone else disrespects them? Why is that person's opinion so important?

I don't get it.

It's been like this for a while. I don't really get it either. Everyone wants "respect" or whatever without having to earn it......not to mention show anyone else the same respect.

Pretentious, self-important people require that everyone around them acknowledge their self-importance and act accordingly. Otherwise, they have been "disrespected."

RESPECT and DISRESPECT are what uneducated morons talk about constantly.

When the NY transit strike happeded it was because the workers felt it was about 'respect'

And I've had a bunch of low-education people I supervised repeat the most idiotic mantra ever..."I only show respect when someone shows me respect first" (OK, thanks for being 2 years old)

Basically, If you have NO POINT, and NO GROUND TO STAND ON LOGICALLY IN YOUR ARGUMENTS you can always fall back on it being about you being disrespected.

Basically it translates as

"I have an attitude problem coupled with the fact that I am not literate enough to put into words how I feel, so I will use the 'respect' card"

Cop: Why'd you shoot him?
Urban Thug: He disresprected me.
Cop: How did he disrespect you?
Urban Thug: I tried to rob him an' he wouldn' gimme his wallet

It's sort of ironically amusing that the one place you can be executed for nothing more than having bad manners is a street gang.

it's been around for awhile, but you probably hear "disrespectin'" more often as it's the in-term (on that particular show with those particular people).

---------
Thuglife 1: damn homey, what's up with dat hoopty you rollin' in?
Thuglife 2: don't be disrespectin' mah ride yo.

Solution: don't get all up in your homey's grill.

---------
Previous years:

Thuglife1: daaaaaaaayum yo, where da bling in yo g-ride?
Thuglife2: don't be hatin' da pimpmobile.

Solution: chill out G; throw back a 40.

----------
Way way way long ago:

Thuglife1: Master, I could not bring back the Cloud Sword of the Ancestors.
Thuglife2: You bring dishonor to your family.

Solution: Seppuku

The double negative struck me as noteworthy. It's clearly not a matter of respect. When people raise the disrespect issue, they are not demanding respect, they are simply demanding an end to disrespect. And yeah, it seems to be used largely as a means of avoiding the subject at hand. So "don't be disrespecting me like that" translates, roughly, to "I don't want to talk about it, yo."
