Curb your dog or else: St Charles, MO

St. Charles clamps down on dog droppings

ST. CHARLES, Mo. (AP) - Leaving dog droppings in public places could potentially land you in jail in St. Charles.

Mayor Patti York said she'll sign an ordinance sometime this week that toughens the St. Louis-area town's pooper-scooper law. Violators could face a fine of up to $500 or get up to three months in jail.

The city council passed the measure last week.

Many municipalities have laws requiring pet owners to clean up after their animals. But St. Charles councilman Jerry Reese wanted to make it easier for police and animal control officers to deal with the problem.

In fact, the new law will make it a violation to even walk a pet without "waste removal equipment."

Dog owners interviewed by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch gave the ordinance mixed reviews.

"I think it's the only thing to do as a responsible pet owner," said Paula Ingerson, 57, who had a small plastic bag in hand as she strolled with her golden retriever, Frazier.

Others questioned why elected officials are spending time on an issue they see as petty.

Robert Blattman, 64, said he typically has his dog, Scruffy, do her duty in out-of-the-way parts of Frontier Park, where no one will step in it. He called the council action "really stupid."

"It's a natural thing," he said. "It's fertilizer, folks."

Anyone else wish to join me in finding Blattman's address and taking a big, steaming dump on his lawn? After all, we're just helping him fertilize.

I'd say a flaming bag of poo on his porch is more in order. What a craphat.

I hate when people won't clean up after their dogs.

We just had Blessing of the Pets at my son's school last week. I am the only one who brought bags to clean up. I had brought the whole box since it was unopened and I was running late and ended up giving out almost 25 bags. We were on the playground where the children have resess, but noone else seemed to think of it.

Nah, have the owner prepared in an appropriate manner and fed to the dog, then the surviving family forced to clean up the ensuing poop before being marched off to the Wheel of Pain. Then give the dog to a more responsible owner.

I live in a subdivision and don't own a dog. Nothing pisses me off more than when I'm out mowing my lawn and I end up stepping in or having to avoid some asshat's dog's shit. If I wanted to have to deal with that I'd own a fucking dog.

Some would say that ordinance is a bunch of shit but I think it's a good idea.
