Georgia mom seeks ban on Harry Potter

Mother of four claims the teen wizard is ‘evil,’ promotes witchcraft

Laura Mallory, of Loganville, Ga., holds up a brochure for a summer camp for learning the art of witchcraft. Mallory was trying to convince a Gwinnett County board of education officer during an Oct. 3 hearing that Harry Potter should be banned from classrooms and school libraries.

Updated: 6:24 a.m. PT Oct 4, 2006
ATLANTA - A suburban county that sparked a public outcry when its libraries temporarily eliminated funding for Spanish-language fiction is now being asked to ban Harry Potter books from its schools.

Laura Mallory, a mother of four, told a hearing officer for the Gwinnett County Board of Education on Tuesday that the popular fiction series is an "evil" attempt to indoctrinate children in the Wicca religion.

Board of Education attorney Victoria Sweeny said that if schools were to remove all books containing reference to witches, they would have to ban "Macbeth" and "Cinderella."

"There's a mountain of evidence for keeping Harry Potter," she said, adding that the books don't support any particular religion but present instead universal themes of friendship and overcoming adversity.

In June, the county's library board eliminated the $3,000 that had been set aside to buy Spanish-language fiction in the coming fiscal year. One board member said the move came after some residents objected to using taxpayer dollars to entertain readers who might be illegal immigrants.

Days later, the board reversed its decision amid accusations that the move was anti-Hispanic.
Come on, it's fucking story!

I do love how they also wanted to ban the purchase of spanish language books, citing the fact that illegal immigrants would probably be the only ones who would read them. Gee, I guess it never occured to them that not only are there legal immigrants who speak spanish but that maybe native english speakers might also like to learn a second language And people wonder how the South gets such a bad reputation.

Do these people ever read what they are proposing a ban on? Or do they just take the word of some "authority" figure, who probably never read it either, and run with it?

I've yet to see or read about any instance where the requestor(s) have actually read them.

From Georgia, eh? Alrighty. Sounds like a white mother of several kids who's a radical Christian (sorry, I'm using my profiling skills here). She might as well support the Taliban.

Exactly! So what are you waiting for?

When I saw the topic, I thought, "Dammit. Not us again." Then I saw the first line of the story and thought, "Well, it would be Loganville." Loganville's about as rural hickland as you can get in the Greater Atlanta area. A friend of mine had serious culture shock when she left a Dekalb County teaching job (fairly urban, metal detectors and such) and moved just a few towns over to a Loganville school where children were excused from school to go home and check on the cows and chickens.

It's such a strangeland that there's a well-known car commercial around here (excuse me, 'roun these parts) for Maxie Price Chevrolet where the owner explains he has dealerships in Monroe and Loganville, and a bunch of people in the audience yell out in thick accents, "Where's Loganville?"

They really are about 50 years behind the rest of us, so it's no surprise they'd be up to something stupid like this.

das

Sounds like my sister-in-law. I gave my 9 year old niece the first Harry Potter book for christmas while they were in town a couple years ago. She wouldn't let her daughter have it because of the "sorcery and wizardry" it apparently preaches.

They didn't want it so much they left it behind. I can appreciate a parent parenting(as extreme as it is), but at least take the fucking book with you and then throw it away. Ingrates.

"Last week, a 15-year-old girl at Caney Creek High School (near Houston) complained to her father [Alton Verm] about "bad language" in Ray Bradbury's classic SF novel Fahrenheit 451. Dad complained to the district and pushed for the book -- which tells the story of a man in a futuristic, totalitarian society whose job is to burn unapproved literature -- to be removed from the curriculum. As the icing on the cake, his request came during the last week of September, which just happens to be the American Library Association's Banned Books Week."

Best line in the article:

"It's just all kinds of filth," said Alton Verm, adding that he had not read Fahrenheit 451.
