Anyone hear of "laser cavity detection"?

The one in question is KaVo DIAGNOdent. Basically, after being relatively cavity free for years, my dentist gets this new machine. They then discover 6 cavities that no one has noticed and would have been otherwise missed for years. As I have some concern in paying for something that a professional couldn't see (the emperors new teeth?), does anyone have any experience with these systems? I'm going to google the devices/technique shortly, but I wanted to unleash the power of Otter as well...

There are cavities, and there are Cavities. If they are not causing you any trouble, leave them alone.

Yes, my dentist has had one of these devices for years. (He's a bit of a geek but then so am I.) It shines a near-IR laser into the tooth enamel and based on florecense (returned light of a different frequency) generates a diagnostic value and a audible tone.

There is a major caveat: Tooth sealants will appear as a cavity to the device. Therefore, the laser cavity detector should not be used as the sole diagnostic. He should confirm that a cavity does actually exist using another means (xray?).

(edited for accuracy)
