Paramount end's 14 year deal with Tom Cruise.. L Ron's coming home.

Viacom Inc.'s Paramount Pictures unit is ending its 14-year relationship with Tom Cruise's film production company because of the actor's offscreen behavior, the company's chairman said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal.
Sumner Redstone, Viacom chairman, said the behavior of the star of the "Mission: Impossible" series and "Top Gun" was unacceptable to the company, according to the Wall Street Journal story e-mailed to reporters.

Cruise, one of Hollywood's biggest stars, has been known more recently for his antics on U.S. television talk shows, including jumping up and down on Oprah Winfrey's couch to declare his love for Katie Holmes and criticizing the use of antidepressant drugs.

"As much as we like him personally, we thought it was wrong to renew his deal," Redstone was quoted as saying in the Wall Street Journal. "His recent conduct has not been acceptable to Paramount."

Not really, though. Look at the performance of the last two MI movies. They didn't do all that well, and certainly didn't live up to the expectations. Sure, he's a still a $100 million draw, but he's not what he used to be.

Movies may not do well at the theater but what about video sales as well. I think it was more of a personal decision by several execs at Paramount. They just got tired of seeing his face on Comedy Central every other day.

Of course it is. But if you don't honestly think Paramount had expectations of MI:3 being a $200 million summer blockbuster (it grossed only $133 million), then you need to read the industry rags more often.

I agree with deftones, Howard Stern sucks! Err, I mean, Tom Cruise is fading. His hijinks of late has really compromised his value.

This couldn't have anything to do with Cruise wanting to make his own movies could it? It's just Paramount not wanting to look like they are the one's that got dumped.

What exactly has been outrageous about his behavior? Jumping on a couch? Getting sprayed in the face with water? Please. If he wanted to still make movies with Paramount they would be all over him.

sure.. $133 million domestic
but also $260 million foreign (so far)
and the MI3 merchandising money is huge.. not to mention the massive amounts that will come in from dvd sales..

MI2 kicked MI1's butt, and MI3 slipped down some.. but $400 mil at the box office + merchandising + dvd sales = still a MASSIVE payday for the studio.

Maybe not MASSIVE - you don't know how much TC got paid for that movie.

"Mr. Cruise’s third installment of the “Mission: Impossible” series has earned nearly $400 million worldwide and could earn half again that much from DVD sales. But its weak opening weekend in May left Paramount executives believing that the negative attention and mockery of Mr. Cruise had hurt the film. Worse still, Mr. Cruise’s rich chunk of the profits could leave the studio barely breaking even."

I believe TC make around 85 million for WotW.

His longterm potential at this point is fucked and is only going to get worse.

Hopefully a new action star will rise. Not sure I would have cut him loose, but it seems the only reason to have him is the prestige. I don't think he makes big bucks for the studio any more. He needs a pay cut.

It seems that America was a bit turned off by his fairly extreme statements which (not coincidentally) coincided with dumping this current publicist/pr person and hiring a relative (Brother?) who is also a scientologist, for that role.

He's been publically mocked in the media and his box office was disappointing.

I thought I read somewhere that he hasn't taken any money upfront for years - all back-loaded deals where he took a very large percentage of the profit.

He fired his old PR rep and his sister took over, that's when he began to go over-board on his Scientology beliefs publicly.

Sister. Yah, that's it.

More proof that a good PR person is well worth their $$$.
