Anyone been to Carnival in Brazil?

So the wife and I, since returning from our cruise to Bermuda, have become quite fond of going on cruises...Ok we down right love them. So here we are starting to plan our next cruise, and one place I have always wanted to go to is Brazil. So, a perfect time would be early next year, and maybe right in time with Carnival. So anyone have any tips, experiences, good stories, bad stories to share? I know Rio is supposedly a pretty dangerous place, but oh well, life is short and going to Brazil plus seeing Carnival is on my "to do list before I die", so any advice would be great.

With any luck, you could kill both those birds with one stone.

Two plane tickets to Brazil: $1500.
Hotel accomodations for 7 nights at a 4 star hotel: $1300.
Watching the bright colorful parade with samba music blaring: free.
Getting your throat slit from ear to ear so a crime syndicate can steal your wallet: Priceless.

From what I hear, the easiest way to get killed is to go to Carnival as a tourist. Its like wearing a big flashing sign that says "Please kill me and take my money" (in portuguese).

Why not just play it safe and visit Isreal?

Not really free if you go to the Sambadrome as those are ticketed and are expensive. Go to Bahia instead, is not as flashy. Around that time there will be thousands of tourists, I wouldn't think the chances would be greater of something bad happening compare to anywhere in the world.

How to say. If you wander off the beaten path somehow, end up in a back alley wearing a brazilian necktie. The only way I'd go there is with a brazilian friend who knows their shit in that country. If I didn't have said friend, I'd hire a GOOD guide that you can trust.
