Calling references but did not get the job...

I had an interview for a job last wednesday and to my suprise, they called one of my references the following day thursday. She had nothing but good things to say about me. It is only Monday but I am suprised they never called my other 2 references yet. The reason why I am being impatient is that the start date for the position is next week so they said they were going to make a decision quickly. I assumed with the company calling my main reference was a good sign but apparently not yet. It sucks because I really would like get in with this company.

They're waiting on your background checks to come through. If the company they hire drags its feet on the process, it could take more than a week. I've see it happen with background checks where I work.

What is exactly a background check? Convictions, arrests? What shows up in these background checks?

It depends on what they check.

Most do a criminal background check. Some also do a credit check. A drug screening...well, you'd notice if that happened.

Political affiliation. Wow, your resume looks great, your references are impeccable -- ooh, liberal Democrat. Well, that's just too bad.

I remember one time I interviewed for a company that totally blew me off. They said it was a 3 interview process with the third being basically a formality of finalizing the offer. I made it to the third interview and they never called after that, never even sent me a "no thank you" letter. Kind of glad I didn't get the job after that. I did hear they churned through employees and that doesn't surprise me.
