Country singer kills tame bear

Troy Lee Gentry, of the country singing duo Montgomery Gentry, has been accused of killing a tame black bear that federal officials say he tagged as killed in the wild.

Gentry, 39, of Franklin, Tenn., and Lee Marvin Greenly, 46, of Sandstone, appeared Tuesday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Raymond Erickson in connection with a sealed indictment returned by a federal grand jury in Minneapolis.

Authorities allege that Gentry purchased the bear from Greenly, a wildlife photographer and hunting guide, then killed it with a bow and arrow in an enclosed pen on Greenly's property in October 2004.

The government alleges that Gentry and Greenly tagged the bear with a Minnesota hunting license and registered the animal with the state Department of Natural Resources as a wild kill.

Gentry allegedly paid about $4,650 for the bear, named Cubby. The bear's death was videotaped, and the tape later edited so Gentry appeared to shoot the animal in a "fair chase" hunting situation, the government alleges.

If convicted, both Gentry and Greenly face a maximum penalty of five years in federal prison and a $20,000 fine.

Greenly refused to comment Tuesday. A spokesman for Gentry said he couldn't comment.

Montgomery Gentry, along with co-singer Eddie Montgomery, are known for hits such as "My Town" and "If You Ever Stop Loving Me."

It's one thing to spotlight. It's another to kill an amimal in a pen. I hope they lock his ass up.

I've liked Montgomery Gentry a bit for years, so I really, really hate this news. If true, I hope the shit goes to prison.

isn't that essentially what Dick Cheney did/does? hunting birds (and old men---zing!) that were released right in front of him from a cage? seems just as weak to me

Next thing we know we'll hear reports that Homer Simpson took Bart to a Reindeer pen to shoot a deer.

Birds released from a cage in front of him?!! Did you get that off Democratic Underground?

As for the actual topic, that was a pussified thing to do.

I've never been to the democratic underground. I thought the cage thing was pretty common knowledge.

They were on a tour guided hunt. Spotlighting, albit illegal, still have animals in the wild.

I did a little research on the story. It's not as though he stood in front of a cage waiting for doves to fly out so he could shoot them.

There's a game farm just a few miles from my house where you can pay a few grand to shoot at elk. It's looks like it's about a few hundred (maybe thousand) acres, but I doubt it's ever very hard to find one.

I totally agree. I'll never support him or his group in any way anymore. I hope he gets the maximum penalty both monetarily and in prison time.

So the morality of shooting sharp objects into an animal until it dies depends on whether said animal is in a pen or just hanging out in its natural habitat? While it might mean he's a bit of a pussy and hypocrite, I can't understand those who think hunting is ok, but that killing a restrained animal deserves prison time. Fine him and send him home. Unless there's some reason to think he's going to start doing this to people, I can't see any benefit to sticking him in prison.

I'm sure the bear would have felt less pain getting shot in the wild as opposed to in a cage. Wake me up when important news happens.

The fact that the bear was tame makes it far worse, IMO. What he did was Like shooting fish in a barrel. This killing served no purpose except getting sick excitement from taking a large animal's life. I doubt he planned to eat the bear.

i personally dont see the point in killing any defenseless animals for fun even in the wild; but an animal in a cage is much worse.

I say put him unarrmed in a cage with another bear and lets have a fair fight.

Why? If hunting a wild bear is ok, I can't imagine why killing a tame one wouldn't be. It's not like one would feel more pain or have a greater understanding of what was going on than the other.

And I'm sure most of the people that are outraged have no problem killing other animals for food when they could live just as healthy/happy lives without eating them.

Hunting should be a sporting type event. I'm all for hunting, nothing at all against it. Shooting a tame animal locked up in a pen without giving it a chance at all just for fun isn't hunting. It's cowardly and a very pathetic thing to do.
