can men take women's vitamins?

I finished mine and my wife switched to another brand and left half a bottle of some women's vitamins that she wanted to throw away. Since I'm cheap I said I'll finish them.

Are they safe for men? I've taken a few and so far no weird side effects.

According to my gynecologist, the main difference about women's vitamins is that they contain an iron supplement (which is needed more by women because they menstruate).

So I wouldn't worry about it unless you miss a period, dearie.

Does the vitamin your wife is taking know it's ingested by a man?

Other than female hormone, I can't think of anything else that a woman takes is not good for a man. Since female hormone is not in vitamins at all, I can't see why it wouldn't be safe to take your wife's.

Short answer... If they are + iron you should probably not be taking them. Excess iron in men may cause health problems.

Long answer...

Those sound like Calcium supplements. They're also expensive. I hope you're not one of those cheap guys.

Yes. They're called (write this down) Flinstones Vitamins. I suspect there's an adult dose listed on them, even though they're marketed toward children.

They give them to you prior to donating platelets. Stops the tingly sensation due to your body thinking it's lacking calcium.

As mentioned, Women's vitamins have Iron in them to compensate for the Periods. Men's vitamin supplements generally don't for this reason....

Excess Iron and Heart Attacks

The free radicals which are produced by iron can promote the development of heart disease. Free radicals can damage (oxidize) cholesterol in the blood. When cholesterol has been oxidized, it is much more likely to "get stuck" in the arteries and blood vessels in the body and especially in the arteries that deliver nutrients and oxygen to the heart. When too much of this cholesterol becomes stuck in the arteries, it makes the inside of the artery smaller, and less blood can get to the heart muscle. Eventually, the blood flow may become so reduced that the heart cannot receive enough oxygen and nutrients, and some of the "starved" heart tissue may die-this is called a heart attack. Heart attacks are one of the leading killers of people in this country and are a very common cause of death in men. Men who have high levels of iron are at an increased risk for heart attack.7

7. Salonen JT, Nyyssonen K, Korpela H, Tuomilehto J, Seppanen R, Salonen R. High stored iron levels are associated with excess risk of myocardial infarction in eastern Finnish men. Circulation 1992; 86: 803-11

Obviously your wife wasn't concerned with finishing the bottle...why should you be? It's not like you're wasting $1000 worth of food or something...just ditch them, and buy your own damn vitamins...

The men's vitamins I looked at (one-a-day for men) have no iron. Since the doctor has me taking vitamins mostly for the iron (mine was low) I went with the regular vitamins that did have iron.

Also, higher levels of iron in your blood leave you open to a Magneto attack.
