Patient wearing oxygen mask sparks fire

Fri Jul 14, 4:14 PM ET

DALLAS - A patient who was wearing an oxygen mask tried to light a cigarette in his hospital room, sparking a fire that forced the evacuation of more than 100 patients, destroyed the room and melted medical equipment, officials said.

A nurse at Methodist Dallas Medical Center rescued the man from his burning bed shortly after the Thursday night blaze started. He suffered serious burns and was taken to the burn unit another Dallas hospital, but no one else was hurt, hospital officials said.

"He somehow got the strength to smoke a cigarette with a nonremovable mask," Dallas Fire-Rescue Capt. Paul Martinez said. "I don't know how he did it, but he did it."

Hospital sprinklers kept the blaze mostly in one room, said fire Lt. Joel Lavender.

Officials didn't release the man's name or condition Friday, citing medical privacy laws.

Dumbass.

If he can't figure out that the stuff coming through his mask was extremely flammable, in spite of all the little warning signs that get posted on the tanks, and he cannot figure out you aren't supposed to smoke inside hospitals, then he got exactly what he deserved.

I say let him burn.

Where did he get the cigarettes? Surely the hospital gown doesn't have a pocket for cigarettes and lighters.

I see people all the time in resturants and other places doing just that.

They are wearing a mask or hose connected to an oxygen tank and they light up a cigarette. I make sure I am sitting no where near them.

I can't believe people still smoke when they get to that point. It is most likely the cigarettes that is responsible for them the oxygen tank/mask. Why would they continue to smoke? Or is it they just don't care anymore because their health has gotten that bad?

They're addicts. When you are an addict, you don't think clearly.

Drugs make you stupid.

Actually, there have been studies suggesting that nicotine boosts mental performance...

As for the person in question, if he's just that dumb, I can't feel too bad for him. If he was doped up on drugs and wasn't aware enough of his surroundings to know better, it's pretty sad that someone was irresponsible enough to leave a lighter around him.

I don't care if they want to continue smoking, but when they endanger MY life by lighting up next to a tank full of explosive gas I get a tad concerned. Those things have been known to leak.

There comes a point where it just doesn't matter anymore, so why not?

Of course they should have quit years before they got ill...

Somewhat off-topic, but one time I drove into a gas station to fill up and couldn't get to the pump because there was a pickup parked at the diesel pump, so he was blocking the others. I was waiting patiently until I saw the driver smoking a butt while leaning against the gas pump. I hauled ass out of there.

not that big a deal

in the army i used to smoke when my hands were moist with diesel and gasoline. the liquid fuel is not a danger. it's the fumes.

It is a big deal. There's a reason you aren't supposed to smoke at a gas station.
