Woman calling 911 to meet cop gets court date instead

Associated Press

ALOHA, Ore. -- A woman who called 911 to get "the cutest cop I've seen" sent back to her home got a date all right a court date.

The same sheriff's deputy arrested her on charges of misuse of the emergency dispatch system.

Washington County Sheriff's Sgt. David Thompson told KGW-TV of Portland it all started with a noise complaint called in last month by neighbors of Lorna Jeanne Dudash. The deputy sent to check on the complaint knocked on her door, then left.

Thompson said Dudash then called 911, asking that the "cutie pie" deputy return.

"He's the cutest cop I've seen in a long time. I just want to know his name," Dudash told the dispatcher. "Heck, it doesn't come very often a good man comes to your doorstep."

After listening to some more, followed by a bit of silence, the dispatcher asked again why Dudash needed the deputy to return.

"Honey, I'm just going to be honest with you, OK? I just thought he was cute. I'm 45 years old and I'd just like to meet him again, but I don't know how to go about doing that without calling 911," she said.

"I know this is absolutely not in any way, shape or form an emergency, but if you would give the officer my phone number and ask him to come back, would you mind?"

The deputy returned, verified that there was no emergency and arrested her for misusing the 911 system, an offense punishable by a fine of up to several thousand dollars and a year in jail.

Thompson said Thursday it was the first case he knew of in which someone called the emergency line for such a personal reason.

"That's taking up valuable time from dispatchers who could be taking true emergency calls," he said.

Doesn't a deputy dating a chronic police-call target sort of remind y'all of "Raising Arizona?"

"I know that Hi has had a checkered past."

"But Ed here's an officer of the law twice decorated ... we figured it'd sorta even things out."

I don't know about this.

Since the woman stated "I know this is absolutely not in any way, shape or form an emergency " , why dosen't the dispatcher just hang up? Seems to me a lot more emergency resources are wasted by hanging on the phone to talk to a lonely woman and then sending a cop over to her house to arrest her.

The whole thing as presented seems kinda bullshitty to me.

Maybe they have to send someone out no matter what. Or maybe he was sent out to arrest her.

Yeah, so the woman can call back, complaining about having been disconnected. What's the point of having a law making calls like this illegal if you are not going to enforce the law? Now, you might come back and say "They should enforce it if she is actually causing problems, but otherwise, go easy on her and give her a warning." My response would be that if she is actually causing problems, someone may be dying, which makes that enforcement too late.

Someone like this wouldn't "get" a warning. She clearly doesn't understand the impact she might have on someone's life by misuing the system, so she might think a warning merely means that they can't do anything to her, so she might be emboldened to call again. Nip it in the bud.

I sorta don't get this, either. Doesn't 911 always get prank calls? Are we gonna arrest everyone who does it?

I think she understood that what she was doing was inappropriate, which is why she prefaced asking for the officer with that all that "This isn't an emergency ect...". I think she was allowing to be cut off right then. All the operater had to do was say "This isn't what this is for" and hang up.

I think having her arrested is an over-reaction.

I'll bet he wouldn't have arrested her if she was 25 and not 45.

Assuming they can find them, they do arrest/cite everyone who does it.

There are more ways to find out who the "cute cop" was than calling 911. She could have called the local substation, or e-mailed through their website, or even written a letter!

Stupid woman. No wonder she can't get laid!

Agreed. She has to be some sort of busted to get arrested for this. Talk about rejection!

It's about time they start to enforce this law. Now, if only the 911 operator who thought the little boy was screwing around when he called about his dying mother (who died hours later after no resposne) was that fast to send a deputy to that house to determine if that was an actual emergency or not, then I would say the system works. But this just prooves to me how screwed up it is when a lonely woman gets arrested because she's a moron and a kid's mother dies on the other end of the spectrum. ALL 911 calls should be treated as emergencies, and the people promptly arrested and prosecuted if it is not.

She probably just had a fantasy about a guy in a police uniform handcuffing her and made it happen. I'm sure that after the handcuffs were on, she said something like "you gonna poke me with that big stick of yours now big boyyyyyy".
