Snake Knowing People... HELP! We have a visitor!

This guy showed up today, and I want to make sure the snake isnt poisonous before I go ahead and name him, and let him live peacefully around the car port.

hmm. small head and a round eye. probably not venomous.

but you'd better send your wife out there to kill it anyway.

I doubt that snake is poisonous. Odds are if it has a oval type head and round eyes it's non venemous. The ones with triangular heads and evil angry eyes are the ones you want to watch out for.

I believe that is a texas rat snake. They make decent pets, but keep in mind any snake you get out of the wild may have intestinal parasites and/or ticks.

A top view of the head would be more telling, but it doesn't look poisonous from that angle. Most of the time the poison glands behind the eyes give them away. There are exceptions, though. Like the coral snake. Unfortunately, in this case, there are no color bands with which to utilize a childrens' rhyme as a mnemonic key.

Trust me. Non-venomous. I have a good eye for snake species. Even from weird angles and distances. Rat snake. Harmless, though it will probably still try to bite. It might even try to poop on you to get away. But it won't kill you.

That is the elusive Indiana Cottontooth. It is very rare for this time of year. I'd try to charm it with an interpretive dance (it's only weak spot)

Yeah, but that nice snake will eat the cute mouse. Then what do you do?

"The spiral of life" ( from Disney's The Serpent King)

(or was that Riki Tiki Tavi?)

I honestly don't think it's creepy to revere life, even the kind that is inconvenient. I term it metahuman. Most will shrug off these alien lives as unimportant and not see the other animals' motives for survival as exactly the same yet with different tools. Some (including me) feel that life should not be taken away for pleasure or convenience. I do strike out in anger at gnats and have waged a war of attrition on the thriving ants and cannot afford to feed every feral cat, possum and raccoon that passes through our yard. I am far from the grace of The Buddha or the insane disregard of Azathoth, but I do what is possible. Just remember-If you've ever wondered what it's like to be them, it's like being you (without the obsessive-compulsive need for entertainment).

He'd keep the rodent population down. I welcome any creature that takes care of vermin and unwanted arthropods.

That's why I set geckos loose in an apartment many years ago. Filthy neighbors brought roaches with them and I didn't want to set out poison with pets in my home.

I certainly wouldn't advocate killing the little fella but I would definately transplant the slithery motherfucker away from my house.

I'm a live and let live kinda person...just don't live on my wall.
