Confusing bathroom odor

Ain't doody. Our upstairs guest bathroom smells like dank water and I'm totally baffled why. There appears to be no water damage anywhere. The smell has been there off and on for a month. At first I thought maybe it was a dead animal in the walls, but the smell is not THAT strong and I would have thought that would go away after some time.

The toilet flushes okay, but it does seem to be coming from that area. Could something be caught in the toilet, but it still flushes normally?

Signed, Confused and Smelly.

Do you use the bathroom much? Try running water through the sink and tub for a while. Maybe your traps were getting stinky.

I would also be concerned with mold issues, especially behind the sheetrock or tiles. If bathrooms are left damp and dark, mold will start to grow.

Yeah, it is sort of a moldy smell, but it seems to be concentrated around the toilet. Our home is less than four years old and that bathroom is hardly ever used. We don't crank up the air conditioning upstairs much so it can get a little hot up there in the daytime. That might be contributing to the smell. I would be surprised if it's mold in the walls, unless it's the piping running through that area (water is almost never turned on in there).

I'll try running the water for awhile.

Do you use those toilet bleach tablets? I started using those recently and noticed the odd smell. Then realized it was those tablets.

No, never even heard of those tablets before. I'm going to try running the AC in that bathroom a bit more on top of flushing the toilet at least once a day and see what happens.

I have heard a lot of words used to describe bathroom smells, but this is the first time I have heard them called "confusing"!

Try pouring a little bleach into the drains, in case something is growing in there, and put some in the toilet tank. You can let the bleach sit in the drains, but flush the toilet a few minutes after you put the bleach in. If there's anything lurking in your toilet, that ought to get it.

You might have a leak under your toilet that you can't see. I recently had an old toilet ripped out and the subfloor had nearly rotted away from leaking around the toilet.

Certainly possible, but I would think I'd see water marks on the kitchen ceiling (bathroom is on the 2nd floor above the kitchen). Um, the odor isn't from my wife's cooking!

I assume that the floor doesn't have any bounce to it. The next place is a bad caulking seal around the base of the toilet. When I go to a house that has a bad seal around the base, I purposely pee around the seal. Mold will grow, but it will be kvrdave urea mold, which is good luck. I'm looking out for people.

i had a simillar experience...it was coming from the sink drain. What happens is it clogs up and gets moldy after some use.. but not enough to back up water.
Solution - poor a bottle of drano in there(the gell kind)... and some bleech if drano does not do the trick.

Dump half a box of baking soda in each of your drains and pour about 8 cups of boiling water down each one slowly. That should clear them out and freshen them up quickly.....

condensation on the tank is probably the source of the moisture that's feeding the smell

Have you been spitting in the sink? Switch to spitting in the toilet and that smell should clear right up...
