Manual vs. Automatic (GTI edition)

Here's a clip of a manual vs. automatic on a GTI. Both are 6-speed, the automatic is a dsg with launch control.

you can also download it here (you need to register)

Can you give us the run down, in case we don't want to watch the videos?

DSG Looks impressive, I do think there will come a time when there will only be automatic, or semi-automatic

it's just a clip of the newer gti with one being a manual and the other an auto, from what looks like a japan car show. The pro level drivers in the manual gets beat by the automatic.

not even close to a shock really. auto's have been faster then sticks in the hands of average drivers for well over 10+ years now? Everyone likes to think they have pro racers skills to rip shifts at the perfect spot every time, but most are so very far from that skill wise..

and now the gap between even what a pro level driver can do and the newer automatic is all but gone.. As I said, not really a shock.. I think the only people who still bother to buy manuals are those that enjoy working the gears more being you feel more in tune with the car..

If I get something like a corvette for my next car I would get a 6 speed, if I get something more along the lines of a sports sedan I would get an automatic. It's not really about faster or slower now, more just how you like to drive and where.. Sticks still sort of suck big time in traffic, they always have.

1st portion gti mkv 6mt vs 6at. note, 400m ~ 1/4 mile.

6mt
0-200m 10.154
0-400m 15.495

6at
0-200m 9.837
0-400m 15.078

the rest, they're just comparing against other cars.

too bad launch control will never make it state side which makes this comparison worthless for the US market.

cool, everyone had said it wouldn't be coming due to insurance issues (which didn't make sense to me) so I just assumed they were right. As much as I like that DSG, with VW's so so reliability I'd want to make sure I warranteed the hell out of that thing.

warranty is 4/50 b2b; 5/60 powertrain. and the gti with dsg has been available in the rest of the world for a couple of years now. but yeah, i understand your concern. if you're looking for a reliable car, buy a toyota.

In this case, it's actually far more preferable to use the Direct Shift Gearbox clutchless manual instead of a regular manual transmission because DSG has vastly faster upshifts even in manual shifting mode than with a regular manual shifts. That's why VW/Audi is adapting DSG tranmissions so by 2009-2010 most of their cars will offer DSG as a transmission choice.

Oh.

I thought you meant bolt action VS slide. (My bad. Cars bore me for some reason. *cough*financial*cough*)
