Making yourself more Googleable

Unfortunately I have a unique name and entering it into Google doesn't turn up anything impressive at all but rather some quite geeky hobbies. When dating I get Googled fairly often and this costs me, which sucks.

What's the easiest way of getting something better in there? It doesn't have to be fantastic but I'd really prefer to have a pageful of new stuff to get the old geeky crap off the first page.

And is there such a thing as a 'cool' newsgroup to contribute to?

I know this is shallow as hell but really i'd just prefer not having to worry about this crap. Why couldn't I have been called John Smith??

Could be worse... when you Google "NCMojo", you end up with several links to a bisexual swingers club.

Try explaining that one to your wife!

Why not create a web page about yourself, keep it updated (blog) and submit that to google?

Yes, but he also has rich, Corinthian leather, which helps to make up for it . . .

Try googling mosquitobites...

Create your own web page. Domains are pretty cheap. Focus on your key words.

"A horse? What the--oh my god."

If you want to wipe that stuff out, you must

a) stop posting about your "geeky hobbies" online
b) start replying a lot to many different blogs on non-geeky things, like football or something

Years ago I asked for some computer game tips using my real name. Some pc advice too.

I sent an EMAIL to the Internet Adult Film Database to complain about a post on their newsgroup and they somehow managed to turned that into a newsgroup posting under my real name. I deleted what I could and complained to them and Google for months about it but it looks like i'm forever going to be in there as contributing to porn discussion now. Sigh.

None of this is the end of the world but one woman has told me the porn thing stopped her from going out with me. Her loss but i'd much prefer start out a first date with a clean slate rather than having to overcome assumptions about my geekiness. That stuff is a reasonable introduction to my internet life, but not my dating one!

Surely at least one of you guys has something impressive in their Google resume? What is it and how did it get there?

Stop dating women who Google you. Really. That's not something it would occur to me to do.

Luckily my name is common enough that a bunch of others show up way before mine.

Hey, we could all start putting references to a [Kahn] on our sites and stuff, but make sure the personal details don't match his real life. Then he can claim the poster on the porn group was one of the others.

Yeah, it's a little strange, but getting more common these days.

Me? I'm fine with my geekiness. A Google search on my (unique) real name pulls up 656 results, and all of them are review or web development-related.
