How rude is stopping your car to make a point?

I have a friend who when he really gets into making a point or talking about something will pull up on the side of the road to talk. Even though i'm a grown, well adjusted man I really, really hate this because my dad used to do it when I was kid, and every time he stopped it was to go ballistic at someone or something, so even now I can't help getting quite alarmed.

I'm kind of surprised that it stresses me out so much as I usually think that I survived my childhood pretty well, but this still happens anyway. I'm wondering how weird it would be to ask this guy not to do it any more, and explain why, but I might seem a bit crazy.

I'm wondering how 'normal' people view a driver stopping their car in the middle of nowhere to talk.

Wait...your friend pulls over just to have a conversation with you? Either he's a really bad driver, or a really good driver. I can't decide.

I guess that guy can't drive and talk.

Some people shouldn't drive and talk.

Ask him whether he'd like you to take over the wheel.

Start freaking out every time he does this. Don't let him get a word in. Or, ignore him. Put on headphones, and he won't try to talk to you.

This is odd, I've never known anyone to do this.

I had some chick pull out from a side street in front of me a few days ago. There wasn't enough room, but she just had to get on the road, causing me to slow down to almost 5 mph. I honked, and she slowed down! I honked again, and she almost stopped, looking out her side mirror at me. That was enough, I put my hand on the horn and didn't stop. After a few seconds she hit the gas. If she was in such a rush, it's pretty stupid to just sit there not moving because someone honked at her.

Too bad I didn't have Wayne Brady with me.

Oh yeah, about your question, no. That dude is weird.

That is creepy. Does he throw his arm on your headrest and turn completely towards you when he pulls over?

One of these days you are going to find a knife in your gut

Yeah, start asking him tons of non-stop questions about why he stopped the car. Don't let him answer.

"Do you have to go to the bathroom?"
"Is there something wrong with the car?"
"Did a policeman signal you to pull over?"
"Are you about to be raptured?"
"Is this our destination?"
etc

He's trying to use his control over the vehicle as a weapon in trying to control the conversation. So was your father. You have a right to be freaked out a little.

Maybe he's doing an As Good As It Gets and giving you his full undivided attention.

Yeah, whenever he pulls over, just stick your fingers in your ear and start screaming "LA LA LA LA LA!"

I was thinking something long this line, except when he pulls over, say "Yeah, I see your point, that makes perfect sense." Then, when he starts driving again, start contesting his point. Repeat as necessary.

Yeah, it's tempting to just let this slide but I think it's weird and annoying enough to say something about. He should be made aware that it's rude. I'd hate to think he'd ever do it to a woman, it could freak them out i'd imagine.

Even more than me!

That's weird that your father did that and now your friend does that. It's like Dr. Drew says, people are attracted to the traumatic experiences that haunted them through childhood.
