7 Dead In Seattle Shooting

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11100866/

SEATTLE - A gunman opened fire early Saturday in a home, killing six partygoers and critically injuring at least one other before committing suicide when confronted by police outdoors.

Five victims’ bodies were found in several places in the rented home in the Capitol Hill neighborhood east of downtown, said police spokesman Rich Pruitt.

One of three other people taken to a hospital died. Officers transported about a dozen witnesses to a precinct to interview them.

“It’s one of the largest crime scenes the city has ever had,” said Police Chief Gil Kerlikowske.

Police believe the shooting happened at a party and the dead, men and women, were in their late teens and early 20s. Officers said they were not aware of a possible motive.

Kerlikowske said an officer in the neighborhood heard shots fired at just after 7 a.m. When Officer Steve Leonard reached the scene, he found one person staggering out of the house with a gunshot wound.

The officer confronted another man who emerged with a shotgun, telling him several times to put the weapon down, Kerlikowske said. The man turned the gun on himself and fired a fatal shot, he said.

Officers then found the other victims inside the home, he said.

They did not believe the gunman lived in the area.

Kerlikowske said earlier that police found a variety of other guns at and near the scene. But police later said the suspect had one other weapon — a handgun.

William Lowe, 59, who lives across the street, said he heard six shots shortly after his alarm went off. He looked out in time to see people scattering from the home, some with faces painted and hair dyed — “part of their party culture,” Pruitt said.

Lowe said he saw the man with the shotgun put the barrel in his mouth and fire.

Nancie Thorne told The Seattle Times that her 15-year-old daughter, Suzanne, was in the house when the man opened fire.

She said the girl’s boyfriend called her Saturday morning to say that they had gone to the house following an electronic dance party on Friday night — a “zombie rave.”

“It’s the worst phone call a mom can get,” Thorne said, crying. “She shouldn’t have gone to the rave. I’ve never approved of those things. ... I just hope to God she’s alive. And if she is, she’s grounded for life.”

Aaron Hoyle, 25, of Renton, said about five people in or around their 20s lived in the blue, two-story bungalow with white trim, and that some were promoters of warehouse parties. Hoyle hadn’t been to the home in about three months, but heard about the shooting on the news and came to see if his friends were all right.

I guess this is the only thing that'll clear out a party faster than porn

This is not a dig at the OP, because I've seen many people post stuff like this here before, but I just don't get why people post local news stories like this here on the forum. It's really of only interest to people in that area, usually.

Actually it's a national story now. And pretty tragic I must say.

Actually, I'm from Portland. Many of my friends travel from Seattle to Portland, and I would gather many Seattle folk have friends in Portland. The Pacific NW is a small community in many ways. I guess ANY story is a "local" story, so I guess there wouldn't be any news reported at all.

I understand that. But shootings happen every day. I just don't understand why this needs to be a specific thread here. Again, I'm not singling you out. There are people here that post way more stuff like this.

So the mom in this story lets her 15 year old daughter go to an all night zombie rave? Actually worse yet she got a phone call from the boyfriend of her daughter telling her where she had been that morning. Talk about paying no attention to what's going on with her daughter. There are ways to possibly avoid that "worst phonecall a mom can get" and it starts with being a responsible mom.

Oh, I don't take any offense. It's a good question. I've often wondered the same. I think people who are more affiliated with a certain city or geographic area, post that particular news.

But I am interested in why this happened. Was it a guy who didn't like the members at the party or was it a thrill kill.

Shootings happen every day... Liquor store robberies, "crimes of passion", drive-by & gang-related, etc...

However, mass shootings that leave 7 dead are pretty rare... Something like this is always national news, whether it is a workplace shooting, a robbery turned massacre, a school shooting, or something that happens at a party or club...

It's sad that the rest of the country isn't interested in a massacre.

It's sad to hear this kind of thing happening. Especially in my town. It's funny that I don't ever recall in my youth that this has ever happened before.

Holy crap. You must not realize that El Scorcho and I are very good friends, and we make quips like this to each other all the time.

Rare? I could name 3 different incidents in the past 2 months similar to this in Phoenix that didn't garner any national media.

You can't have any idea how responsible or irresponsible the mom in this story was since the article is unclear of whether they asked permission or begged forgiveness. Seriously, people think teenagers are always where their parents think they are, but a good network of friends giving out misinformation can get a kid the night out. At least it worked for me, for a while, some of the time.

Thank goodness the shooter shot himself, saves us the expensive trial, grandstanding lawyer, and candle light vigils.
I feel bad for the other people shot though. What a way to end a party.
