What'd You Do on Your 21st Birthday?

So today's my 21st and while I don't typically get too excited about birthdays, I'll admit that this one's doing that. It'll be nice to have the option of getting a drink when going on if I feel like it. For the last year, I've been the guy in the group who's gotten the water. Well, no more, even though I still love my water.

Anyway, my friends are taking me out tonight and as tradition, they're doing what most good friends do on this occasion: get me one step from death via alcohol consumption. I'm not a huge drinker, but I have felt the effects of a hangover before. Unfortunately, I have to be up for a class where I need to speak (and well) at 10 tomorrow morning, so I'm hoping it's not too bad.

So, Otters, what'd you all do on your 21st?

"I've had eighteen straight whiskeys, I think that's the record." - Dylan Thomas

But seriously, try for 21. You don't sound like much of a drinker, but you gotta start somewhere. I would substitute tequila or jaegerbombs or something for the whiskey shots. I like whiskey, but 21 would hurt, especially late in the game.

Other options, a nice nine holes of bar golf, a pubcrawl, a case race, etc.

A whole lotta nothing. I had a lacrosse game the next day, and we had a 24 (48?) hour rule, so we couldn't indulge in any substances. I had been drinking since HS, so it wasn't a big deal, if anything I drank less after 21.

My 21st was in 1986 and actually fell on a Saturday. I was working as a waitress at the time and had the night off, so my sister-in-law and I went bar-hopping in Westport, Kansas City's nightclub district. The only thing I remember about the evening was drinking a lot of B-52 shots and getting sloppy fresh with this redheaded guy, then sneaking out on him after he was all blue-balled.

EDITED TO ADD that I would ask your friends to buy you a substantial dinner before you go out drinking. At least then all that alcohol will have something to mix with and you'll stay on your feet longer. And be careful. Those 21 shots HAVE been known to kill people.

Dinner's always part of our birthday plans. Since there's usually the three of us, one's bought the dinner and the other's bought the drinks. I wouldn't dream of drinking without food in my system.

It was 1992. We went to a restaurant that gives a free drink on your b-day. Our regular waitress said "Hey, I've been serving you all year!" I still got the free drink.

Pass on the "21-run." I've been on enough to know it's not worth the "effort."

Me? I just went to the liquor store for the first time and bought a bottle of rum.

I turned 18 just before the drinking age was raised to 21. Anyone who had already turned 18 before the raise was off the hook on the 21 deal. But I didn't really care 'bout drinking. I just wanted to get into clubs to see bands.

Re-read your post. If you're speaking at 10, reschedule the "celebration." If you don't drink much, this isn't the time to try.

I'll bet that Al doesn't make his speech.

Mine was December 8, 2001, which was a Saturday, but I have no idea what I did. I know I didn't drink.

jesus, it's just a speech. i'd wager 75% of the great speeches were giv en while buzzed/drunk. While he might be still in college the sooner he realizes that an off the cuff speech/presentation is always more effective than a "canned" one, it'll do him some good anyways.

This is also coming from someone who went out until 3am last night, got hammered, and then went into work at 9.

September 20, 1995. I do remember going to dinner with my family and my sister making me order a drink, as if I wasn't going to.

After that, probably hung out with a couple friends. Nothing too exciting.

Went out with a bunch of friends, got kicked out of several bars, did lots of drugs, went to work the next day still drunk.
