Question about Citizenship in Hong Kong...

Approx 20 years ago, Hong Kong was under the United Kingdom/Great Britan. So let's say one was born in Hong Kong during the rule of UK, would they be a citizen of Hong Kong or UK ???

They'd be considered a Hong Kong citizen. The situation is a bit complex since HKers are given a "disabled" version of a UK passport called the British National Overseas. But this passport doesn't mean they can actually line in the UK though.

Yeah, most HKers that emigrate end up coming here to Canada. Probably much easier than emigrating to the UK

(and on a related note, Canadian citizens could apply for a UK passport at one point, but that ended sometime in the 50's or 60's I think)

The U.K. has some of the most complicated citizenship laws of any country. There's like seven different tiers, cutoff dates, Commonwealth exceptions, etc.

Hong Kong was British until June 30, 1997. I would know since I live in Hong Kong right now! (though I hadn't moved here yet during the handover).
