New fast food tax

Fed up with burger wrappers, french fry containers and paper cups, Oakland is the first city in the nation to force fast-food restaurants, convenience stores and other businesses to help pay for cleaning up street trash.

Under a tax approved Tuesday night by the City Council, businesses will be assessed between $230 and $3,815 annually, depending on their size. More than three-quarters of the affected businesses would only pay the minimum fee, which amounts to 63 cents a day.

"I don't think that's too much to ask so neighbors don't have to keep picking up trash from their doorways," said Councilwoman Jane Brunner, who proposed the measure.

The city would use the projected $237,000 a year to hire small crews to pick up litter in commercial areas around high schools and middle schools where most of the garbage is found.

The fee was opposed by the Metropolitan Oakland Chamber of Commerce and business organizations that say the costs will be passed along to customers, including low-income residents and young people who are the biggest consumers of fast food.

If it's mostly found around schools why not get the students out there to clean it up... maybe they'll learn not to litter in the first place

Well, they are predicting the cost will get passed along to the filthy litterbug customers. Seems fair to me.

They should pass this on to smokers as well. I hate seeing their trash everywhere.

I thought this was going to be about a fat tax on fast food places.

Interesting tax although there might be better ways to deal with the litter.

I have no problems with this. It's a small amount of money, it WILL get passed on to the consumer, and maybe the place will look a little nicer.

I'm surprised at how many people are OK with this tax!

Do YOU litter? Oh well, pay for it anyways.

If it's the stupid teenagers doing it, make the SCHOOL responsible for the clean up.

Dumb dumb dumb.

Yeah, but none of it is to cover littering yet.

Liars. The tax is designed purely to increase Oakland's revenues, NOT to stop litter. I agree that what is needed is stronger anti-litter enforcement.

Because they won't. Low income areas are shitholes for a reason.

Who do you think are going to be "hired" for these pickup crews? Bam, takes care of some unemployment too!

This isn't really a tax on fast food as it is a tax on disposables, though...

"Let the bears pay the bear tax. I already pay the Homer tax."

I don't agree with this tax. Make the litter-bugs pay for their litter.

Correct! Oakland has been a shithole for as long as I can remember. Jerry Brown tried to change it but didn't work. You can't even take an evening stroll without carrying a pistol or shotgun.

Rather than tax a way to take care of an illegal activity, why not put a few cops on the streets where the trash is generally, and fine people for their littering?

That seems more reasonable to me, and should bring about more revenue, and decrease the illegal activity. The tax will only let you learn that it is okay to litter because you have paid a tax to let some guy clean it up.

Because you silly bear, then the taxes to pay the wages of the police force to patrol would go up.....

I'm guessing you've never been to a poor neighborhood.

I wish there was some way of inducing poor people to act like there's such a thing as neighborhood pride, but it won't happen. Most of the people in my neighborhood will move somewhere else within a year; why should they give a shit whether or not the garbage is picked up?

Unfortunately a large percentage of them treat their environment the same way they treat their lungs.

Good call. Start giving hefty fines for even small infractions and it will curb littering. Put a $1,000 fine on a person for littering and then if they don't pay it, sentence them to community service: 40 hours of picking up trash in the neighborhood where they littered.
