some parents are DETERMINED to hurt their kids

http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/GE0602/S00006.htm

Children’s Commissioner, Dr Cindy Kiro, has released a report on an investigation carried out by her Office following incidents where two young children were hospitalised with suspected non-accidental injuries in 2004. These children were then further abused while in hospital. In both cases, parents were convicted of assault against the child.

Is New Zealand the only place this happens?

Nope. Can't remember the syndrome name, though.

Munchausen Sydrome by proxy is what I've heard. The parent wants to be the one to rescue the child.

I don't think this was a case of Munchausen's by Proxy. Could have been, I suppose.

I thought Munchausen was when a person fakes an illness in themselves or others (like their children) in order to get attention.

I think the "by proxy" is when it's their children, and I'd always thought it was for sympathy and attention too. Could be more than one motive though, I suppose.

You're both right.

link

A psychological disorder in which a parent or other caregiver gains attention from medical professionals by repeatedly causing or fabricating disease symptoms in a child.
In 9 years of working in children's services, I've personally only seen one case of this, and I have real doubts that this mother had it. (but, I'm not a physician or a phsychologist and am not qualified to make that decision - just had to add a disclaimer)

It seems that once a parent is diagnosed, (or accused, however you want to look at it), it's very hard to convince anyone otherwise because one of the triats of the disorder is that ther person lies about such incidents.

I have seen some video of people who have Munchausen's by Proxy who were caught in the act of suffocating their kids to the point of passing out, then calling for help. It's sickening.
