Do you think the statement "black don't crack" is racist if it's a compliment?

Today I was talking with a black woman that is 75-years-old.

She had amazing skin and looked much younger than that. She was a nice lady and had a good sense of humor and she repeatedly told me she "loves the lord".

While looking at her a phrase popped into my head that I'd heard from a black co-worker about 15 years ago. I thought he was about 40 and he told me he was 61. I thought he was lying until he showed me his drivers license.

It was then that he said "black don't crack".

I've never used that phrase since but I gotta admit I was slightly tempted to tell her that in a compliment. I decided it might not be received well and passed.

Whaddya think?

I don't get all up in arms about what some people think is a racist comment. So, no, I don't think it's racist.

I'm sure several people will, though.

Nah, you would've been fine saying that to her. Now if you had said that to a white liberal well then yeah you're racist.

I believe comments only qualify as racist by intent.

I've never heard that phrase before, and I consider myself an authority on racism.

Well, by definition it is racist, since you're talking about race... but is it offensive? I don't think so.

Now, is it stereotypical? Probably. I think it's on par with saying that black people have big dicks, or that Orientals are all good at math. It's not offensive, per se, unless you are offended by any racial generalization... which many people today seem to be.

But does it seem like black people don't seem to age as much physically as they get older? It does to me. But hey, I'm just calling a spade a spade.

The sad thing is many of "Da Blacks" can be so friggin' overly sensitive about things that are in no way meant to insult them. Next thing you know you're being accused of being a racist or in a fight.

If you are talking about skin, it is certainly not racist, it is just an observation. And, dammit, it's true too! Darker skinned people age so WELL. :envy:

Funny...I always pictured Giantrobo as being black.

I don't know if this generalization about blacks is true. Many blacks I've known look their age.

I'm Asian and I've been told several times that Asians don't age. In my case, it's true. I approaching 40 and I'm often carded.

75-year old Black Woman Cracks up Logan's Steakhouse!

Your thread title was misleading... It sounds like she got a few chortles here and there, instead of cracking up the whole place...

And what difference does her race make, anyway? You mentioned that several times, and the race of your coworker several times... You didn't mention the race of the guy who cut you off!

Racist!
