Just realized something about Slashdot

Most of the people who post there are whiny nerds.

Not sure why it took so long to come to that conclusion...

Well if you generally browse at -1 that would explain part of the problem.

I hate the way they start a new thread when they probably meant to just add to an existing one....

I browse at 2 unless I'm moderating. Lately I've gotten mod points every other day.

Damn son, it took me about half a second to figure that out. It's really bad too.

I thought about it, but it's not really a forum. It was just a random grumble, really.

I've gotten the mod "power" every few days, too. I never use it as you only get a few options and most of the time, there isn't one that applies to that post. (ie COMPLETLEY FREAKING WRONG INFORMATION)

Slashdot posts some good stories/news...but yea, the community there is rather dull. They will bash Microsoft every chance they get while reminding you in damn near every post they run some flavor of Linux. But then when a flaw in one of their precious apps is discovered they will spew some BS to defend it, then remind you they run Linux. When they aren't reminding you of their home PCs (which btw run Linux), they are rehasing the same tired pr0n jokes or bitching about reposted articles.

But if you can stand to wade threw the BS, you will actually find a few great ideas/commentary in some posts...which makes it worthwhile.

I agree that viewing at 2 or higher weeds out most of the bad posts. It really isn't that bad, considering the sheer number of people that visit and/or post.

I don't go to slashdot, but do go to digg. Silt's comment about complaining of reposted articles gets on my nerves. Everything on the net has been seen before it makes it to digg. Just because you have, doesn't mean I have. Step off!

Slashdot is actually a bit behind in news. By the time it hits there, I've already seen it on digg or on BoingBoing. However, digg is a bit too wishy-washy for me for a "hard tech" site, and BoingBoing gets on my nerves with their subtle but stupid religion-bashing, endless self-promotion about whatever small0time rag reprinted their author's sci-fi short story, over-reliance of the phrase "____ blogged about it" and their idiotic "articles" (ads) for Worth1000.

So time and time again I keep coming back to slashdot. I find that AskSlashdot is still a section that is relatively troll-free and extremely helpful. As such, I moderate on there first.
