What are they reading?

Please excuse my ignorance.

Every morning when I take the train to work, I see the Jewish people reading this booklet. What are they reading? Is it the Bible? Do they read a few pages, a chapter, the whole booklet, etc. in one setting? And why are there different books? The size ranges from tiny to small to textbook size and from 20 pages or so to thousands.

Rather than collecting guesses, how about you ask tomorrow morning, and report back?

I would imagine the Torah or a Jewish prayer book, but I really don't have any proof behind that.

Edit: After a little searching, it's probably a "siddur" (a Jewish daily prayer book).

OK. Assuming it's a prayer booklet. Do they read the whole booklet or section of it? I've seen some start in the beginning and some start at the last few pages of the book when they get on the train. Maybe they read the beginning before getting on the train?

Since I just read about it on another page, I'll continue. It looks like that siddur contains prayers that are specific to the day of the week within the season of the year. So, if it is a siddur, then they are probably reading the prayers for the day.

I just read the paper usually. My neighbors never home so on some long rides to La Jolla I just try and keep up with what's new in the community, you know?

Same with the christians reading thier prayer books, they probably read it straight through the first time, then just crack it open after that
