Insomnia SUCKS

So what do you do when you can't sleep? Especially if it's because you have too much on your mind or are stressed about something? Mine is work, and jobhunting... jobhunting also sucks.

I know I'm not likely to get any SERIOUS suggestions, so witty ones are also acceptable.

I have a lot of trouble with not sleeping. Both the girlfriend and I work nights, so I try to sleep during the day. Most of the time, I can't for more than 3-4 hrs. It's usually either too hot, too bright, or too noisy. "Quite Time" is from 10pm-8am. The exact hours I work. Thank you very much, apartment complex.

So, what do I do when I can't sleep?
Watch movies, read books, clean the apt, read the internet, set up playlists in itunes, go snowboarding, get drunk, wake up the girlfriend for sex, do laundry, work crossword puzzles, "torture" the cat, wash the car, whack off.

When it's at night and I can't sleep?
Everything above that can't be done at night.

Seriously, I used to do muscle relaxation exercises. It involves tightening then slowly relaxing my muscles starting with my right hand then left hand, left foot, right foot and keep the rotation going. Each time I would count 1 for each arm/leg. The trick is to focus on keeping the rotation along with counting and not to move too fast or too slow.

Yeah, uh, it wouldn't be all that coffee would it?

I love my tea, but I start drinking decaf after 1 or 2pm.

Have kids. It's an instant cure for insomnia, at least it was for me. Can't sleep? Try not allowed to sleep because the baby's screaming. After a fews days of that, believe me, you'll have no trouble catching some z's.

Meh, the original was pretty good, and the Nolan remake wasn't bad either...even though it brought nothing new to the table.

Thanks to Groucho for once again going for the joke that was too obvious for the rest of us to even consider using.

I keep Nyquil on hand for just this purpose. Not for any of the symptoms it is recommended for, just the "so you can rest" part.

I usualy just grab the laptop and see if any overseas friends are online on Yahoo or MSN to chat. I often start to doze off after 15 minutes of mindless chatting. So thank you, boring Swiss chat-pal!

Try a few teaspoons of Benedryl. I hope you get some sleep soon and find a really great job.

I put a movie on that I've seen 100 times and just listen to it. Remember to set the sleep timer so it doesn't make noise all night, especially if there is a stinkin' menu that repeats.

Yeah, yeah. I'm working on it! I have some interviews in L.A. next week.

Thanks for the good suggestions! I ended up trying something similar to what Thor suggested, but it was to put on someone droning on and on, on one of the government or PBS type channels. Got a couple of hours, hopefully more tonight.

Oh and the Benadryl's a great idea and works great on me... but literally makes me sleepy for DAYS! What can I say, when it comes to drugs, I'm a lightweight.

I occasionally suffer from insomnia. It's usually because I'm thinking about stuff, so when it happens, I just get up and deal with whatever is bothering me.

I've looked for jobs at 3am. I've also written whole chapters of a novel when I can't sleep. Once I do whatever it is that was bugging me, I don't have too much of a problem getting to sleep.

Of course in extreme cases, I will find a really long movie on TV, lay down, get real warm and cozy, and eventually drift off to sleep. TV is good for that.

Meh, just get some *good* alcohol for the "so you can rest" part. NyQuil is disgusting. At least real alcohol tastes better and has much the same effect.

I try Simply Sleep or some other sleep help pill. I take it about 30 minutes before I go to bed, and then I'm out like a light within minutes of lying down. It beats staring at the ceiling for hours trying to sleep..

Drugs are for losers. It's hard alcohol that you'll be needing.
