Avoiding the GF's grandparents/family...Am I in the right?

Ive been dating my girlfriend for over a year now and ive been over to her grandparents 'house' twice. Now, my girlfriend has great parents, and they live in a decent-size house, and its always pretty clean. At one point they invited me to go over with them to to visit their relatives, so I went.

The house has 2-3 bedrooms and everything else a 'normal' house should. I walkup to the driveway and am greeted by not one, not two, but three seperate gates. Its like their trying to protect a bank vault. As I walk-in (or try too, a TV is right in the fucking enterance) and I get swarmed by 3 dogs all trying to lick my balls. After shooing them off, and walk in further and take a look around. First thing I notice is that the kitchen 'table', which would normally fit 6 people, could only fit one since they have newspapers dated back to the late 70's on them. I KID YOU NOT. I was flipping through one talking about Nixons impeachment.

They offer me a seat...and, well, I can't do it. The couch is filthy. There is popcorn, cats, dogs, shit (yep, actualy cat shit) on it....just nasty. My girlfiend takes her sweater off (which was thrown away after) and puts it on the couch so I can sit down as not to act 'rude'. I sit there, watching, yep you guessed it, NASCAR, and a TV stacked on another TV which was stacked on ANOTHER TV. Thats two broken ones and one that has a nice red burn throughout 40% of the screen. The food was cold turkey, beer, and what looks like cat food. I didn't eat anything and chose to go outside to have a smoke. While out there I see a few cats...and then a few more..and then a few more. After all is said and done I counted 21 cats. All had gooey eyes, missing hair, burns....just disgusting. After that, I walked out. I went back through all 3 gates and ran to my car not saying a word to anyone but my girlfriend.

Now am I in the wrong to say I NEVER want to go back ever again? I feel like skiblet and I should sit down at Logans and have a steak.

You're wrong.

Nixon wasn't impeached, and speculation about whether he should be impeached was from the early 70s, not the late 70s.

Unless you're talking about Judge Walter Nixon, who was actually impeached in the late 80s.

Put up with it or ditch the gal. That is what you are truly faced with. The sooner you realize that, the sooner your life can move on.

They are grandparents aren't they? How much longer do you think they are going to live? If you really like her, just avoid them until their inevitable funerals.

I think you and skiblet should dump your respective g/fs and date each other.

I feel it's just right.

9.5? I guess a double-stacked TV is pretty bad, but 9.5? Oh... or how many points does Nascar get you?

Yup. It's one or the other I think and you need to work out which is more important.

If the newspapers are not completely soaked with cat urine, visit one more time, and kindly offer to haul them off. Old papers with articles of historic events can be pretty darn valuable! Then call animal control.

At least your girlfriend realized that the place was uncomfortable for you. She must take after the other side of the family.

Yeah, you really need to go back just to get pics of the place to post here.

Did the GF warn you it would be like that? You say she's normal, so she has to realize the grandfolks are clearly NOT.

Serious answer: everyone has family - and the family is often not one they are proud of.

Ask yourself if you can tolerate the family at the same level the g/f can - that's what's important - can you do the 'same' as the g/f can? It's all about compatibility and doing what the other partner 'can do'.

Agreed . . . for the most part.

In this case (and I'm actually speaking from personal experience . . . an ex of mine had a mother who horded stuff), if it is truely and OCD kind of thing, then you may want to think about the possibility of inherited mental issues. It's certainly not a definite thing, but maybe something to consider.

Older people with a diminshed sense of smell, a little deaf, and won't wear their glasses... there could be cat shit on the couch, and they didn't notice. They would probably clean it up if they noticed it. And didn't forget what they were doing on the way to the kitchen for a paper towel.

I don't know how old they are, but anyone who lived during the Great Depression (there are still some around) got weird. My Grampa had the hardest time throwing anything that might possibly be useful away. It wasn't OCD, he just had gone through the experience of not being able to GET a piece of string if he needed one. He did keep everything neatly, and could be persuaded to weed things out.
