So my neighbors tried to burn down my apt ..

I got the phonecall last night and immediately underwent the 400 mile race home. Got here at sunrise to check things out. Basement is ruined, first floor is nasty, 2nd floor (me) is only marred by the damage caused by the FD kicking in the door and letting in the smoke, thank god.

As for blaming the neighbor, my understanding is that he was in the bassement hen it occurred. Probably smoking a J.

Power is back up, but place is still "uninhabitable". Guess I'll just dick around here during the day and go crash with friends at night. Official cleaning service for the structure isn't scheduled until next Wed/Thurs so I don't know if there is anything I can do to speed the process.

Yay me.

Funny story - I left my 2nd PC on running a few programs and would VNC in every day to queue up more tasks. When it stopped responding yesterday, my first reaction was, "Fuck, damn thing overheated and burnt the apt down".

That last bit is pretty funny.

What a way to ring in the New Year!

Marijuana is a harmless drug. It's the people that smoke it that you can't trust.

Similarly, guns don't kill people.

I had a couple of drunks set my drapes on fire with a candle they had lit for "romantic" reasons. They thought it was hilarious, until I threw them out with the ruined curtains.

The problem is not that drugs will ruin your life, or turn you into a criminal... the problem is that drugs make you stooopid!

Good luck with your restorations, man.

So right now I'm pimpin' a room at the Hilton Homewood Suites. I dragged all of my computer gear over since I was a tad worried about LCDs in sub-zero temps and I wanted to make sure everything worked. The one I left running is a bit flaky - one stick of ram went bad and the 2 HDs are clicky. I'll mention that to the insurance co on Tuesday - no idea what they'll say. I also threw about $200 food away - smokey cereal and all the meat/dairy in my fridge. Funny how it was warmer in the fridge than in my apt.

The maids will probably call the FBI when they clean the room and see the "mobile command center" i've assembled. Gotta make sure I stow all the small, easy to steal gear before leaving tomorrow.

I think you should be able to call your insurance company immediately. You have an emergency and need to file a claim.

What kind of coverage do you have? Sounds like your whole place was smoked out so that means you'll have to toss your clothes, furniture and anything else that could smell like smoke.

Do you rent or own? You may get free carpets as well out of this.

So my hotel officially rocks. They roll a keg into the lobby and leave it unattended from 5-8 pm. Sure, it's only Bud but what they hell ... do all the puzzles in the paper and drink a half-gallon of beer ... It sounds good to me.

There's a popcorn machine, too.

Free beer and popcorn!!! Should have kept the smokey cereal though, you could be on to something there...
