MP3 player for around $100?

Haven't got a clue about that stuff. It's for my 13 y/o niece. Oh yeah, and it has to be pink... Any recommendations?

You can get a 512Mb iPod shuffle for that price, but it won't be pink. She can get a pink cover for it though.

Thanks, I just checked and read a review. Small, simple, no gadgets. $129.99 CDN at Future Shop. I also saw packs of 3 sleeves for $35. I'll probably find lower prices after Xmas and since I'm only going to see her at New Year's it sounds like a plan.

Do you have Sears or will they ship to you? I saw the shuffle there for $79 (USD) this week and the sleeves were $18.99 (USD)

Just a thought.

The shuffle is overpriced for what you get, but the kids love em and you can't go wrong.

Actually, for $100 you won't be able to get much. Are you at all familiar with her MP3 needs? What kind of storage capacity does she need?
In a word, her needs are that she wants a MP3 player. She's never had one before, and she's not picky. As usual she'll be extremely happy with what she gets. I figure between $100 and $150 CDN should do it.

I checked on sears.ca and they don't have any mp3 players. I'd rather buy it locally, easier to return in the (unlikely) event she doesn't like or it breaks or something. Like I said, prices will go down during Boxing week between Xmas and New Year.

Well they have the even more overpriced sony 1gb units for $169. But I wouldn't recommend them (they are not really MP3)

Does every store's Canadian version suck?

The only thing the Ipod can't do is use DRM protected WMA's. If she downloads illegal music like a good teenager should, it won't be an issue

Ipod Shuffle is pretty cool, I am sure they sell a pink skin for it.

http://www.pezmp3.com/

The biggest problem with the ipod shuffle, is that you cannot select which song you want to hear, you can only shuffle, hence the name. You can skip to the next song, play the same song over again, or go to the previous song, but you'd have to have the list of mp3s committed to memory to find a specific track—and do a lot of repetitive clicking to get there.

I think the pez player has the same problem, but maybe not, plus it is really cool and you'd be supporting an independent inventor . . . and it is right at $100.

Hmmm... She's at an age where she'll know what songs she wants on there and which ones she'll want to listen to. So on second thought, the "shuffle" thing doesn't sound like such a great idea. Back to the drawing board. I'm looking at other ones, like teh Samsung.

I almost got my daughter one of these.

128MB built in, and has an SD memory slot to add to it.

I saw them for $50 at Target the other day.
note: I got her a red Nintendo DS instead.

Cool yes, but the iPod Shuffle is not very useful in my humble opinion. For almost the same money I'd rather get the Creative Zen Nano, which has a real display on the player.

FWIW I have an iPod shuffle and I find it quite useful. But there's no portable player sold that can hold my entire music selection, so I just have the songs that I'm currently into on it anyway.

The Shuffle is great for certain situations. I love mine but I only really use it while working out, and I know my music really well so I don't need a display screen. For most, including a young girl, it probably wouldn't work too well.

>60GB of music is a lot! do you really listen to all of that music where it needs to be portable?

I would agree. I have a shuffle and a regular Ipod. The shuffle I load with about 5-10 files (2-hour mixes each), so its easy to navigate. A little girl with the constant changing pop scene, might find it difficult. The shuffle is good for working out, snowboarding, etc. the ipod I use in my car, plane flights, etc.

I am sure she will be very happy with a shuffle regardless though.
