How to stop unwanted cubicle visitors at work

I have a co-worker, I'll call him Bill, that is need of some help. We sit in a small cube-farm type area and several times a day this one guy, we'll call him Bob, stops by to talk, and not about anything work related. It's gotten to the point where Bill wants to say something so this guy doesn't come by anymore, but since he sits close to us and has to work with us from time to time, it can be a sensitive situation. Leaving when Bob is approaching isn't really an option as the cube walls are high and Bob only sits a few cubes away.

I've bailed him out by calling his extension but we've found that doesn't always work as sometimes Bob will stand around and wait for Bill to get off the phone.

I suggested he wear the AFDB and Bill has suggested things like stabbing himself, or possibly start talking Spanish and pretending he doesn't speak English.

What are your suggestions to help get Bob to stop visiting Bill?

glib answer:

Start farting. Alot.

serious answer:

Bill needs to man up and tell Bob to stop stalking him. He could be tactful and say something like "Dude, I need to get more work done. Would you please limit your visits to a couple of times per week?". If it doesn't help, Bill should mention it to his own supervisor.

reply to glib answer:
We discussed the farting thing. I guess Bill could adapt his diet to accomplish that, or we could get one of those farting machines where bill could just press the button and make the farting noise?? Tho the lack of smell might not send Bob away huh?

As for the serious answer...
It's a tough situation being that Bob sits like 2-3 cubes away from Bill and we work together. Bill doesn't want to hurt Bob's feelings. We've already mentioned it to our manager and he will escalate things if he has to, but he's hoping that Bob's going to be busier in the next few days and hopefully won't have the time to make these visits.

Bill should start hitting on Bob (assuming Bob isn't attracted to Bill).

First thing I thought of was the farts, but it sucks sitting in your cubicle with it stinking.

Second thought was:

But that could backfire if Bob IS interested!

Next thing you know... Bill starts getting gifts from Bob, invites to dinner, provocative pictures of Bob in interoffice mail... and at that point Bill can't claim sexual harassment, since HE'S the one that started it!!

It's a vicious circle!

Bill and I have discussed the door idea... In a cube farm that isn't an easy thing to do, esp since that wall of the cube is a low one and easily can be seen over (most of the time, Bob stands on the outside of the cube and talks to Bill from over the wall.)

Sorry, I forgot to add:

strategically located.
Maybe some barbed wire across the top.

Honestly, I would probably just tell the guy that he's distracting. Also, if your friend gets into a mini-argument with him every time he comes over, he'll eventually stop. It doesn't matter whether he is right in the argument, just argue.

Bob: Wow! I just dropped the biggest log today.
Bill: No you didn't. Prove it.
Bob: I flushed it, I can't.
Bill: So, you're lying to me? I don't like liars.
Bob: I'm not lying. Why do you have to be so mean?
Bill: Because I hate you.

That's funny on a bathroom humor level and a general level. Kudos.

Just tell the guy to tell the other guy he has work to do and doesn't have time to talk. I mean it is a "work place" afterall. Unless they hang out in circles outside of work I wouldn't see the problem telling him to buzz off. I mean seriously whats he going to run and tell the boss he snapped at him because he was keeping him from working.

Man up and grow some balls.

The answer to many office-related problems:
headphones

Plug them into the cd player on your computer, if ipods or the like aren't allowed. Or just slip the jack-end into a pocket.

Works on airplanes as well.

I have to figure out what book... I think it was a book by the Dilbert guy, though it was text, not cartoons. There was a whole section on "how to keep from being stopped in the hallway". To this day, I will occasionally stop by the breakroom for a "handful of ice" if I think I might encounter an unwanted friend in the hall.

Put this at the entrance of Bill's cubicle.

If it doesn't work, just add "especially not Bob" to the sign.

Sounds like a lot of people need to grow a pair. Just tell the guy to get to work.

Everytime Bob comes to visit Bill should unzip and pull it out. Whatever the result, Bill shouldn't have to worry about Bob visiting anymore.

Tell your friend to stand up everytime the guy comes over. It makes is obvious that the other guy is interrupting your work.
