Are people the same online as in person?
I had a chance last weekend to meet a fair amount of peeps from here at the Portland Meet... even better, I had a chance to meet one other Otter in Vegas this weekend (plus, he brought another friend who I'd chatted with online... a friend of his from IRL)!
Both of those went so well, I was wondering if I was lucky or if you can usually know what to expect from a person, just by knowing them online?
The Portland Meet was fun... some people I clicked with in person, some people were much easier to be "friends" with online than in person...
Vegas went SO much better,
SO unbelievably awesome, but I don't know if that was because we'd talked so much on the phone?
So what do other Otters think? Have you met Otters or other online friends in person before? Does it usually go well?
And, have any of those online friendships progressed to hanging out offline, or even close friendships, or even romance? (I have heard there are some Otters who met SO's here or elsewhere online... Whogirl and Supr I know about, don't know the others...).
Just curious to know if I'm just batting a thousand or what?

In real life I am "touchy feely" and smell faintly of day-old goulash. Neither of these aspects of my personality translate well into my online "persona."

Okay, I have been very successful meeting people online. All the dvdtalkers have been great, and I met my wife online which says a lot. But I agree that you will have a better success rate meeting people that frequent dvdtalk than setting up a myspace meeting or something.

Also, who am I kidding: I'm not batting a thousand, I've met some people I just am not that wild about, but no one that was obnoxious in person...

Ive met probably 60+ that are people I know online. There are quite a few that I would consider good friends and talk to on a daily basis (online). I can go to these people with any problem and know that they would be there to give me advice (or make me laugh). Sometimes having online friends who are removed from your life in a sense can be better than the ones you know in 'real life'. I have also seen a few of these people more than a few times in person, just recently in fact, and some of us in So Cal try to get together for lunch from time to time.
My first meeting also ended up as my first online relationship, which lasted for a year or so. He and I are still good friends.
Then there are the people you meet who come and go and your online friendship with them doesnt change at all. Then theres also some people you meet that are nothing like they say or act online that can change the way you think about them once you are back on the boards. Technically, its the same as most friendships/relationships in real life. Some people you get along with, some people you cant stand and would never be friends with. I would like to think that I am pretty much the same person when I step out from behind my keyboard. However, if I were single, Id probably be less reserved about how many of my 'friends' I talk to.

Most people I've met online have had fairly similar personalities as online. Before the internet was popular I used to chat on BBSes and I met a bunch of cool people. I also met some complete weirdos.
I've only met 2 people from DVDTalk. They seemed normal.
I think I have a different personality online. In real life I'm much more laid back and I'm more likely to keep my opinions to myself.

Man, that's brilliant. Nobody use that without giving me royalties.
