1978 Chevy Malibu Classic. There was nothing "classic" about it.

1984 VW Rabbit (used). It was nice and cozy, but its size made me feel like the car would overturn every time I made sharp turns at a modest high rate of speed.

Back in '88, I saw this '79 Dodge Horizon hatchback for $600. I liked how it looked and had to have a friend actually test drive it for me since it was a manual transmission (I quickly learned, and still drive a manual). I must say that that car taught me a lot about how to fix cars - I changed the drivers door lock (reset the pins even), replaced the windshield with a friend who happened to work in a windshield repair shop and did this every day, and various other things. It was so that I could tell what was going wrong by smell, and before going anywhere out of town I had to mentally calculate the odds of actually making it there. I sold that in '90 for an '85 Chevy Cavalier, now that was a good starter car (even though it was an automatic).
