Anyone ever use a metal detector?

I've been toying with the idea of buying one for some time now. There are a bunch of Revolutionary War & Civil War battlefield/forts in the area that I would love to check out. They're not protected or anything and in fact one of them in a bunch of forrested trails for the public.

I doubt I'd find anything but I still think it'd be a fun way to spend some time and get some exercise at the very least.

I have two and recently went out to a construction site that was the site of a Civil War battle. I came home with a Confederate bullet, which is now in my display case. There is a Yahoo group for metal detecting that will help you find others in your area that will make your hunts more enjoyable, and may even lead you to some nicer finds.

Be careful if you are using it in a minefield. You can set off mines that way.

No, but I could probably find it if you gave me a couple hours.

My husband has used a Spectrum XLT for years. It was also his dad's detector of choice. I know it is made by White's and was pricey, but both swear they'd never own a different brand. One thing my hubby loves about it is that he can send it back to White's and get the computer upgraded on it when they come out with a better version.

Other than that, all I can tell you about it is that you get in a LOT of trouble if you're caught detecting on federal property. No, not an experience tip -- just warnings from everyone I've ever met who's into the hobby, lol.

Wish I could be more help, but it's not really my thing. (Hubby's overseas again, or I'd ask him for you.) I figured that's at least a two-thumbs-up for a brand/type from a couple of long-time hobbyists.

Good luck!

Bump.

I got a White's Prizm V with some bonus money. So far I have found two wheat pennies, four toy cars, a crapload of old iron and steel left by previous owners and this:

So, did you take the plunge Tom?
