How did people have good breath before Llisterine?

maybe not before listerine, but before modern dental products. I imagine people wanted to have good breath a few hundred years ago to have sex or whatever. How did they clean their mouth?

The frayed end of a green twig makes a decent toothbrush, and people have been chewing parsley, fennel, cloves, and other plants for their breath for centuries.

a rough piece of linen rubbed over the teeth, chewing on various herbs like Mike said. There were lots of ways to clean the mouth back then but I'm not sure how many people actually did it.

I always figured that their B.O. smelled so bad, that bad breath wasn't a factor.

Like most of life's quandries, the answer lies in booze.

saw on Mythbusters that rinsing with Vodka was just as effective as using mouthwash. It also removed foot odor as well as soap.

Fresh breath is an invention of the 20th century. Before that bad breath was known simply as 'breath'.
