Phil Hellmuth trying to hustle ARod?

Looks like Phil Hellmuth has been recruiting ARod and his attractive $252 million contract.

NEW YORK -- Alex Rodriguez was cautioned by the New York Yankees that playing poker in illegal clubs could be dangerous and harmful to his image, according to a newspaper report.

Early last month, the Daily News reported the star slugger had attended games at an underground club with professional card player Phil Hellmuth.

When contacted by ESPN.com on Wednesday, a Yankees official said the club has never brought up the topic of attending poker games with Rodriguez. Scott Boras, the third baseman's agent, also denied that the Yankees had warned his client.

"The Yankees have never addressed or spoken with me in regard to any off-field activities regarding Alex Rodriguez. And the Yankees have never spoken to Alex regarding any of his off-field activities," Boras was quoted as saying in a story published Wednesday.

Playing at such clubs is not illegal, though it can be against the law to operate them, the Daily News reported.

Rodriguez was not punished or ordered to stay out of the clubs, but commissioner Bud Selig was monitoring the situation and could intervene if necessary, the newspaper said, citing sources it did not identify.

MLB spokesman Rich Levin declined comment to the Daily News yesterday.

Yeah, and right after that article came out the cops raided that poker room. They've hit a couple other ones the past couple of weeks too. Guess there's no other crime in NYC to keep the cops busy.

Well if the NYC police let the underground poker continue, it could be a bad influence on the youth of the nation. We don't want them exposed to things like poker.

The more important question is: Does ARod really think he has a chance against any of those guys? He probably gets read like a book.

A-rod has as much of a chance beating those guys as Mr. Helmuth has of hitting a 95 mph fastball

Thats going a bit too far. Poker is completely different. Chris Moneymaker is proof that ANYONE can win against anyone on any given day.

I meant consistently. Even I could make contact with a 95 mph fastball, but you bet it would only be once in every 10-15 swings.

It's a bet. And I'll do you one better. I'll give you 30 swings.

You won't hit it.

I just said make contact, not put it in play.

I've hit 85 with consistency. Then again that was 7-8 years ago when I was still in playing shape. You're probably right.

I was at some batting cages a few months ago and I went for the 70mph cage (fastest they had) recalling how I used to occasionally hit those as a kid. I was choking up like Eckstein just to get the head around in time. It wasn't a full 60' 6" (probably closer to 45'?), but I still felt like a total chump.

Don't forget that a 70mph fastball from 45' is about the same as a 93mph fastball from 60'.

I'll take that bet. I've seen him hit 85 mph drunk before.

I'm thinking the actual speed wasn't 70, but was lower and adjusted to be the same as 70. Or maybe I just can't tell distances and it was the proper length. Whatever it was, I felt like I had to start swinging before the ball was in the air to hit it. It sure didn't look like a Bobby Jenks fastball

Yeah but he really shouldn't have been driving.

It might be tough for me now though. The last 5 years of softball have turned my baseball swing into a really long softball swing.

At any rate my point still stands. A-rod could win a battle or two but he'd lose the war miserably vs. any poker pro.

please...

I know espn made him look like the luckiest son of a gun ever in their coverage but I bet almost every other person that has won the WSOP was up against the wall with only 1 card to save them at several times the year they won tht title.

I am pretty sure Moneymaker has since made it to final tables in other tournys... not to mention he won like a $80 sat to get his spot in the WSOP... how many final tables do you have in your poker career?

The Scorch and hypeiv are right. Poker is all about probability and although there is a probability of ARod winning, there's a much greater chance of him losing. Also keep in mind that cash games are much different than tournament games.

I wouldn't exactly say that Moneymaker hasn't done shit. I do think that he enters far less tournaments than Raymer does though.
