Why do people give out old candy for Halloween?

I know it probably isn't right to gripe about free candy, but every year my kids get some old, nasty candy. Last night when we checked through the bags there were candies that were clearly packaged for Easter. If you don't want to give out candy then just turn out the lights and don't participate.

Mostly old people do that...

We had this one old man in our neighbor hood passing out old jelly beans and unwrapped ribbon candy in plastic sandwich bags. He also was sitting with like five disposable cameras taking pictures of all the kids who came to his door...

Easter candy isn't that old. It's still good.

I would've given that kind of stuff out if I'd had it. I ran out. In the past I'd never gone through more than two bags; tonight I went through 3 and needed 2 or 3 more.

What I hate are those nasty gummy jelly bars. Who the hell gives those out?!? I'd like to find out who dumped 10 of them into my baby's bucket then go egg their house.

One lucky Casper went home with a candy jar full of peppermints that has been aging since 1996. He was ecstatic.

Candy, I figure Halloween is a time to have people take out my trash. I bag it all into bags I get at the store and give it out. By the time, they look in the bag, they are long gone and won't remember where it came from. This way, they have to through it out and I don't have to lug bags to the dumpster. :P

Your general forms of "candy" have shelf lives of 2-3000 years. Your kids will be ok.

I gave away some Easter candy; all singly-wrapped, and stuff we either don't like or wouldn't eat. Better than wasting it. And the stuff with bunnies or eggs, no, I didn't give those away, that would be too obvious.
But it was also mixed in with 'fresh' stuff, so those people who got 'rare, out of print' candy, also got new stuff.

Somebody in our neighborhood was giving out Panda Express fortune cookies.

Now that's cheap.

My kids had gotten a bunch of candy at a parade last August, we gave out most of it over halloween (four or five pieces of whatever per kid), giving better stuff to kids we knew. I think next year I'll just get chocolate bars for everybody.

Just go to the free clinic and grab a handful or two of condoms. Kids love those, and parents think that you are a saint for protecting them in the years to come.

Considering the age and costumes of some of our trick or treaters they would probably come in handy.

The candy we received was covered with bunnies and clearly from Easter. I am sure some of the other candy was older, but at least it wasn't obvious. I am just going to look at the bright side, it gave me an excuse to get rid of some of the Nerds that we got (which always end up spilled all over the house). I am sure Nerds have a shelf live that exceeds mine, but that is my excuse and I am sticking to it. Also, we didn't receive anything that looked like it recently resided at the bottom of Granny's purse so it will go down as a good year overall.

Better old candy than what I heard on the radio --- apparently, some girl got some good ol' human feces in her trick or treat bag of goodies. The culprit was some bearded man, and "she didn't see what he put in her bag, but it was big and brown".

I would rather have feces than those mini Almond Joys. I can't stand coconut.

Years ago trick or treating in a development, we used to get comic books from one house. We made sure to always hit that one every year!

One year, some guy gave us a card for a free year at a YMCA.. we never went though.

I hate that generic candy wrapped in the plain orange and/or black wrappers. I heard that this candy was only produced in 1983. It just keeps showing up!

I would suggest starting your trick or treating at 4pm next time. I bring out the crap when I run out of the good stuff.
