Trick or Treaters: The Costumes

Ok, so my husband and I passed out candy together tonight. We live in a new neighborhood this year, which is filled with kids and Halloween is pretty big here, much more so than our old neighborhood where there wasn't many kids.

Anyway, we noticed a few interesting trends about Halloween costumes.

Many kids were dressed up as sports heroes, which is fine except we noticed more than one (white) kid dressed up as Detroit Piston Ben Wallace, complete with Afro wig and blackface. Granted this new neighborhood is mostly white, but I think you'd get your ass kicked for wearing that elsewhere.

There were two teenagers dressed up as Ghostbusters, which was pretty random and strange considering the movie was made well before the kids were born. There were also some teenage girls dressed in what appeared like Flashdance outfits carrying a boombox that blared Wham's "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go". I guess 80's nostalgia is big even among the under 15 set.

One kid had on a black shirt and a red tie; I asked him who he was supposed to be and he said Billie Joe (from Green Day). We both commented that it was interesting to see how long that band has held up and that they are still big with kids nowadays. I joked it would be funnier if he was dressing up as "Billy Joel" instead.

Anyway, any interesting trick or treaters in your neighborhood?

On the adult side, I saw this one posted on a blog.

Notice the green cardboard the girl in the back is carrying.

I went to this party, and if there was a contest, these guys would have won.

My oldest son dressed up as Billy Joe from Greenday, he was wearing a black shirt and red tie. Funny.
I was the only person that dressed at work today.

Still? Hell they won every award imaginable just this past year. I imagine a good portion of kids in america are green day fans now.

We had a girl dressed as a bottle of ketsup. Lots of kids not really in costumes.

We're out of candy; I'm going to have to start giving out cans of Coke, Slim fast bars and Tom Ramen.

The majority of families around my neighborhood are Latino. Most of the young kids had pretty generic costumes and a few kids showed up in regular street clothes. I don't bother asking about costumes anymore; I just hand out the candy and let 'em move on.

edited to add: A lot more kids out this year too! I might have to hand out grapes if this keeps up...

Most of my staff at the hospital laboratory that I manage dressed up as characters from The Wizard of Oz today. Here's a shot of a few of them.

I had someone come to the door as a ....box. WTF. They took a normal box, opened both ends, tied some ropes as a sort of suspenders and wore that.

Other than that, normal stuff like princesses, a few Spidermans, a wolf man & a dog.
