Should I go for a an MBA or a BS is Computer Sciences?

I have a business degree, and I am looking forward to school again. I did 2 years of engineering in Mexico, but when I came back to the states I got course credit but no course equivalency. I ended up with 42 additional units of course credit. I just wanted to know if it would benefit me more to have another degree or just get a Masters. I like computers and electronics and I got into business by accident I suppose. Any opinions on which would be best is appreciated.

Based upon your subject title, I think you should just CLEP your way to an English degree.

I'd also go w/ MBA. Alot more opportunities there than with a basic CS degree.

This is a really big decision that will have an impact on the rest of your life. You should at least have a poll....

My GPA is 2.8 after 207 units. I assume it'd probably be an issue for an MBA program since they ask for a minimum 3-3.5 average. Would this limit my options or could I excel in the GMAT and get a chance to get accepted with my gpa?

Yes, having a low GPA will limit your options. But you can probably offset it with a high GMAT score and strong letters of recommendation.

fields requiring a CS degree are A)flooded with potential applicants
and B)getting offshored

There's a major difference between those two career paths. If you go for a B.S. CS, you'll have more of a technical role than if you go for a MBA in Information Systems (which is the path I assume you'll pursue).

A 2.8 will severely limit you if you're looking at a top tier MBA program (where the average GPA is usually around 3.5-3.8). Even with an 800 GMAT, you'll be, at best, pushing it. A good GMAT score should be able to compensate in a second tier program (where the average GPA is usually around 3.0-3.5). Of course, this also depends on your school. A 2.8 GPA from a Georgia Tech is different than a 2.8 GPA from St. John's Community College.

It really depends on which school for the MBA and which school for the CS degree. Employers generally will focus on the quality of the school you got the degree from and not how well you did in the program itself. So, figure out which schools you can get into and how they rank.

Right now my to options are FSU or Florida A & M. I graduated from SDSU. I'd still need to contact admissions or a counselor and see where I'd stand with my GPA. I need additional schooling to grow within my company. It is not essential, but I know it would help and they also pay for it.

I'd go for the BS, that might give you more options since undergrad admissions requirements aren't as strict. Though I'd go for engineering instead of comp sci.

Update: I graduate this December with an MBA from Florida State University. It was fun to look back on this thread. I can only say that it has not been easy with a full busy life, but made it. Go Noles!

Way to deliver, OP!

I'm thinking about going for my MBA, since I work for a top-tier university that offers tuition reimbursement. But it is about as top-tier of a program as you can find, not sure if my ~3.5 undergrad GPA is enough.

Re: Should I go for a an MBA or a BS is Computer Sciences?

My GPA and GMAT were not the greatest, but the letters of recommendation, my professional and academic background, and having faculty friends at FSU helped a lot. I can say that my Graduate GPA is above 3.5 and I did promise FSU that I would kick ass in class and study my ass off. The support of my family was huge and I did miss a lot of weekends the past two years doing group work and studying. I committed to it and I am finally on the other side.

I already have a full time job so I did not take a break working at least 40 hrs a week, commuting 60 miles round daily, and being in class 6 hours a week. We'll see how it goes with my company as far as advancement and $ and I already have serious interest from other places. Should be fun.

Congratulations on the degree. It was obviously the prospect of coming back to this thread and bumping it that pushed you towards the degree's completion.

Thank you all! And yes, DVDTalk has been my go to place for many years. Keeps me sane if that makes any sense.
