Would you sell out?

Every time I hear someone say, "oh, I wouldn't do that for a million dollars"... well, it's bullshit. I think almost anyone would do almost anything if the price was right.

Personal example: I was offered a job once as a web designer at RJR. I was doing freelance work, and the money pool was drying up... but I just couldn't do it. It seemed like blood money to me, so I turned it down.

But that would have been for about 50K or so. Would I be willing to abandon my principles for 100K? 200K? I don't know. It's a tough call.

What about you? You may be a person of morals and principles... but would you be willing to sell out if the money was good?

I can see your point, but would you do web design for Budweiser, McDonald's, Glock, or WalMart? Nearly every publicy traded company has a certain evil to it, it's not like anyone doesn't know the dangers of smoking. If you can afford a case of cigs, you can afford the patch!

I'm not so sure doing webwork for a tobacco company is blood money Now if you're the guy coming up with the advertisements thats a different story.

Yes I would. If people are too stupid to keep buying tobacco, why should I care if they slowly kill themselves with the company product. Sure it might be addictive, but anyone with real willpower can force themselves to quit.

Well, let's not focus too much on the evils of tobacco -- that's sort of off-topic. In general, though, are there certain things you would not do, certain jobs you would not accept, no matter how good the money was?

What if a Mafia chieftan wanted you to work for him in a totally legitimate enterprise? The money would be good... but think of the source. Would you go for it?

OK. Say someone offers you $50,000 to star in a gay porn video. Do you take the job?

Sure. Sometimes you have to suffer for art.

Not really, isn't that why you didn't take the job?

I've definitely got a price for just about anything, and it's probably a whole lot cheaper than you would think.

Well, I'm a real estate broker....

All depends. I have worked for people I don't like, but I also tell plenty of people to take off. I could suspend my morals for certains things, but not for others. Offer me the money and a situation, and see where it gets you.

One thing I have found, though, is that if I had 10 times the money I have now, I doubt I would do anything differently, and I would still get stressed over money....even though I have no legitimate reason to.

The more money involved, the less principled I am.

Actually, that's not a true. In every case, it's a risk vs. reward type of situation. So if I was offered a billion dollars to shoot up Times Square, I probably wouldn't, as the risk of getting caught is so high. I'd take it on a case by case basis.

Case by case. If the company does harm or indirectly does harm...I probably wouldn't deal with them. I had opportunities at a variety of defense contracts (analyst work mostly, dealing with weapons distrubution, etc)....but in the end, I declined because I felt like I would contribute to more people dying.

I was just talking to someone about selling out for music. I'd do it (for the right price)....even though it could ruin my love for the music.

Now, defense contract stuff, I would have no problem with. Working with the mob, that's a little more dicey. Even if the business you're working for is completely legitimate, you don't know it's going to stay that way. But working for cigarette companies or government contractors, no problem.
