Filing items in a 3x5 sized box...

I've been storing things within a 3x5 box (pictured here):

Now, I have the tabs, and the related items BEHIND the appropriate tab. But my daughter was looking at it and was confused when she looked IN FRONT of each tab and found the wrong cards. Now, if these were wrapped in folders, for example, it would have been obvious what to do (and the label would be behind the item).

If you had, for example, a tabbed phone book, then if you are looking for items starting with a "B", you would generally look behind the "B" tab.

But I can see my daughter's point, in that in this case, it is easier to jam your hand in front of the tab cards to get what you are looking for, especially for the thinner ones. In this case, the very front of the box would be the items, not the tab, but there would be a tab in the back of the box.

Have I been doing it wrong all this time?

I don't think Robert's Rules of Storing Things in a 3x5 Box specify whether they have to be in front of or behind the tab. Do whatever you want.

I like to do it like they do it in record stores. (...when nobody's lookin' of course! )

Items in front of the tab, but A closest and Z farthest.

-THEEK!

Since A is in the back, I would put them in front of it. If A was in the front, I would put them behind it.

You know... so the "A" content is between "A" and "B"

But your way works fine and it makes sense either way as long as you are comfortable with the system. What's it take, 2 seconds to realize you're in the B's and to flip it?

Oh, I see the confusion... I am using the BACK of the tabs to write the name of what is there... The "A" tab you see in the back is just an extra one I haven't used yet that is just facing forward...
