What to do in Portland (Oregon)?

I've been to Portland a few time, but never on my own. I'm hoping to get there sometime in the next few weeks (basically one of the first three weekends in October) to visit my brother, but since it'll be just he and I for most of the weekend, I'd like to have other things to do on my own, or even for he and I to do. I've asked him for ideas, but wanted to throw it out here for the Portland Otters.

Also, is there anything interesting coming up in the Portland area in the next few weeks that would make one weekend better than another? Like, any local event, or something...

Hey, Kitty, if you check into this thread, wanna meet me for a Starbucks?

I elect Kittydreamer to set up an Otter Meet while you're in town.

My brother has already suggested that I take advantage of no sales tax in OR (vs. almost 9% in WA ) and do some shopping, so I just might!

Hmmm... MAYBE... It's kinda short notice, isn't it? Seems like most Otter Meets take MONTHS of planning... oh, and you'd have to make sure Kitty came, so I wasn't the only chick there.

Uhhh, YEAH we do...

What we don't pay is state income tax. That's the only difference in our favor that I'm aware of.

Well I get married on October 8th, so if you want to "cuddle" we should probably do it before then.

I've read they have more strip clubs than any other state, but that's still a waste of money. I wish I could remember the name, but there's a great Mexican place on this one street.

I'd say rent some Jet Skis or do something on/near the water.

YES! I've tried so many times and have been shot down so much that I've just given up. Anyone who is serious about doing a Portland area otter meet, email me at [email protected] and we'll set up a public place and time.

I do??? I don't

Actually, I pay 7-7.5% sales tax depending on if I am in town or out of town, and I pay a lot in property taxes. Washington has no income tax, however.

Absolutely I'm serious! Sure, I'll come alone, didn't realize we were going to make it all cloak and dagger, but I can understand if you don't want to invite the rest of these freaks...

Uhhh... I thought you wanted me to come alone, and now you're inviting all these guys??

Sure!! I'd be game for a meet! I know already that I will be down either the weekend of the 8th-9th or the weekend of the 15th-16th (I can't come down the weekend of the 22nd-23rd), but I'll also be there some weekend in November, too! I'll shoot you an email ASAP! Just promise me you won't tell anyone my real name...

Yeah, sales tax is 8.8% I think, up here in the King-Pierce-Snomish counties area... might be 8.9%, I've almost stopped looking at receipts, it's so depressing. Some of that is additional taxes we have because of local levies or something...

Anyways, back on topic: So... uhhh... Dave, you gonna drive to Portland if we have an Otter Meet?

Hmm, since no one is actually giving suggestions on what to do (and since I can't make an otter meat), I can start, but I am sure my suggestions will suck since I don't know anything. I spent 8 weeks off and on in Portland for work, and some of my highlights were: (We probably have totally different lifestyles though)

Mt. Biking around Hood River area (best highlight)
Take the light rail up the hill to the park with the japanese gardens and such
Easy biking, trail running in Forrest Park
Wandering around town on weeknights finding slightly undergroundish clubs
Going out alone on weekends, drinking, waking up in Gresham
Becoming friends with the bartenders at Applebee's next to the hotel
Finding the same rotation of 5-6 restaurants for every meal
Walking around/shopping/eating in the Norwest area (Is that what its called? I forget)
The sunday market thing/swapmeet
Flirting with the hotel receptionist to no avail

Seriously, just wander aimlessly around town and the parks. The people in general are very friendly, and you shouldn't have any problems. They seem to have a festival or fair by the waterfront every other week or something.

Sure. Always remember that life is short, so take time to smell the hippies.

State sales tax is actually 7% and everything above that is added by local and county authorities. I ate some place in Seattle where it was over 9%.

On behalf of Kitty, I'm insulted.

Well, I've emailed Kittydreamer, so at least she and I are going to meet up! Anyone else who wants to join us had better email her! Otherwise, once we get an exact date and time picked, we'll let y'all know!

McMenamins

We celebrate my wife's birthday every year with a round of par 3 golf at McMenamins Edgefield.

We used to live just a few blocks from McMenamins Kennedy School and would go there on occasion for a movie and pizza and beer.

McMenamins Tavern & Pool is just a few blocks from my office, and is affectionately known as "Plant 11".

Got it, NR. I started a thread for the Portland Otter meet, too.

Thanks you guys!
