One and only Hurricane Katrina thread pt2

People were complaining the old thread was getting slow... I'm not sure if it's related to the length of the thread or whether it is due to the problems DVDtalk seems to be having in general recently. In case it is the length though I decided to start pt2.

I'm just sitting here, completely ill thinking about this tragedy.

I'm trying to think about what I would have done in this situation. I hope I would have packed up the family and gotten them out of town, but I feel terrible for the children, elderly, sick, disabled, etc. who just can't get out of the way of things like this.

I doubt Minneapolis will ever be hit with this kind of disaster, but I'm definitely going to go home and hug my family tonight.

I didn't get a chance to fix my post. At this point, it's being reported that ALL REFUGEES IN NEW ORLEANS are to be evacuated, not just those in the Superdome. Here is a heavily snipped article. If the link doesn't change, anyone wanting the whole article, go to - Source: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9130254/

Governor: Refugees must leave New Orleans
Confusion abounds as floodwaters continue to rise after levee breaches

Floodwaters from Hurricane Katrina flow over a levee in New Orleans on Tuesday.

Updated: 5:11 p.m. ET Aug. 30, 2005
NEW ORLEANS - With water rising in the streets of New Orleans and conditions rapidly deteriorating, Gov. Kathleen Blanco said Tuesday that the tens of thousands of people now huddled in the Superdome and other rescue centers would have to be evacuated.

Because of two levees that broke Tuesday, the city was rapidly filling with water, the governor said. She also said the power could be out for a long time, and the storm broke a major water main, leaving the city without drinkable water.

ďThereís a serious leak and itís causing the water to continue to rise,Ē New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin confirmed. Adding to the problem were malfunctions in the system the city uses to pump out floodwaters.

The rising waters and failing pumps were thwarting rescuers' efforts to pull hurricane victims to safety and assess the damage, but "many, many reports" of bodies floating in the flood tide made clear the deadly impact on the Crescent City, said (Mayor) Nagin.

"We probably have 80 percent of our city under water," Nagin added, "with some sections of our city the water is as deep as 20 feet. We still have many of our residents on roofs. Both airports are under water."

Television footage showed plenty of other problems for New Orleans, including buildings on fire. And police said they had made a number of arrests for looting.

The developing nature of the disaster made it impossible for officials to give specific accounts of which portions of the city were flooded, but aerial video showed standing water and destruction literally everywhere.

'A lot of people awaiting rescue'
"All I know is when my people go out, they tell me there are a lot of people awaiting rescue. I hear there are hundreds of people still on their rooftops," said Gen. Ralph Lupin, commander of National Guard troops at the Superdome in New Orleans, where some 10,000 people had taken shelter.

Eighty percent of the city's 485,000 residents had heeded orders to evacuate the city before the storm hit.

Federal Emergency Management Agency Michael Brown said "itís going to be weeks at least before people can get back" to their homes and business in New Orleans.

And when they do return, "itís going to be incredibly dangerous" because of structural damage to homes, diseases from animal carcasses and chemicals in homes, he said.

Two kinds of levees

He said that New Orleans has two types of levees: one set holds the water back from the Mississippi River; the others provide protection from Lake Pontchartrain when it swells during hurricanes and other storms.

"Considering what/where NO was it might be possible some companies would refuse to sell them flood insurance (although I guess there is a federal program that covers them if they can't get private insurance right?). The interesting question/debate now IMHO is whether or not we should rebuild NO, atleast in the form it was before. Maybe we should take a lesson from Hong Kong and built up the foundation first and then rebuild the city."

Yes as mentioned, Flood is ONLY available through the government. Why? Because of simple insurance principles. One principle of insurance is you cannot insure something that you KNOW FOR A FACT will have a loss as you cannot charge enough premiums. Well, only those people who are in flood areas would ever buy flood insurance, so they will sooner or later, have a loss.

I don't want to get to technical, but even the government will refuse to issue you a flood policy if you have turned in several (last I heard was three) serious (what they call substantial) losses in a given time period. You MAY be eligible for money to lift your home or physically move it.

Your question can go even deeper. Since this is backed by the government which means our taxes, should our taxes go towards this. It is an interesting discussion, but probably more for another thread on government use of taxes. A similar question always comes up when California catches fire. Should people be allowed to live on the hill sides, where they will likely have large losses.

Huh.

http://www.wwltv.com/local/stories/WWLBLOG.ac3fcea.html
4:21 P.M. - WWL-TV Reporter quotes officials as saying there may now be 60,000 people in the Superdome and that more people are still being urged to go there.

Sorry Chris, it was on CNN. I'm sure Fox will show it as well. At least they should.

I'm guessing they are rounding people up and bringing them to the Superdome as a central hub, and then they will slowly take them all elsewhere. Just a guess, I'm not able to watch any live coverage at work.

What was with that snazzy music that CNN had playing in the background while showing the video of a CG rescue of some kids?!?

It sounded like porn music.

From that same source:

3:59 P.M. - WWL-TV reporter Jonathan Betz reports widespread looting and WWL-TV cameras showed people walking out of Canal Street stores with racks of clothes and electronics. Some looters concentrated on basics and supplies, while others made no secret of their desire to get what they could.

Now I can understand and would probably be a person who would steal food and water to feed my family. But to steal stuff that isn't going to help you live the next couple of weeks is totally selfish.

So I'm guessing that the Sept. 18th NFL game, Giants at Saints won't be taking place as scheduled at the Superdome.

They just said his name was "Michael Barnett" <sp?>

I saw one quote from a response that they showed on the screen that mentioned Live Journal.

Natural dangers emerged, too. Authorities reported spotting a 3-foot (0.9-meter) shark cruising the city.

Great, now if they wanted to swim for help, they have to worry about sharks now.
