Re: What is your favorite podcast?

My brother just today turned me on to a new podcast that we listened to today on our way to a relative's house for a Christmas Eve get-together. It's called "My Dad Wrote a Porno." It's funny, funny stuff; my brother said that he had to pull the car over twice because he was laughing too hard to steer as he listened to it during his drive from Austin, Texas to Mississippi yesterday.

Here's a link to its Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Dad_Wrote_a_Porno

These guys were radio legends in Detroit for 25+ years... got the shaft and were fired one day. They cover a lot of newsworthy topics but the excel at putting drops from movies or Trump into conversations and it's hilarious stuff.

Re: What is your favorite podcast?

Bumping this one as I picked up another podcast worth listening to if anyone is looking for something new.

The Truth Podcast -- it's a fun short stories podcast. There isn't much to each episode -- they're only about 30 minutes. The stories span genres but most seem to have at least a bit of comedy to them. There isn't anything too thought provoking with the stories, they're just fun.

Reply All podcast - I've only heard one episode in this series Long Distance Call. It's a two parter about a podcaster/journalist doing a deep dive after getting a spam phone call saying his Apple computer had a virus. I won't give away too much but it's really enjoyable to follow him down the rabbit hole of an Indian scam call center. I'll be listening to this podcast more often.

WTF with Marc Maron

Has he been on vacation since his last podcast was Sept 27 with Galen Anne Hurd?

I got hooked on Science Vs. a couple weeks ago. Episodes range in length from thirty minutes to under an hour. Each episode tackles a topic (climate change, vegans, plastics, abortion, immigration, vaccines, etc.) and try and examine every angle by presenting evidence, statistics, facts and interviewing the scientists behind the studies and the data. I've found it super fascinating.

Re: What is your favorite podcast?

Browsing through this thread from the beginning is pretty funny. Mentions of iPods and myspace.

I only listen to a couple.
Disney related:
WDW Radio - This one is great for anyone that loves Disney. Lou Mongello has really created quite a nice community and he talks with a lot of passion about all things Disney.
Defunctland - This is the accompanying podcast to his popular youtube channel. Has some fascinating interviews with several imagineers.

Lore - - This is an excellent podcast that basically takes the creepy stuff of legend and dives into the history or their origin. The podcaster is very thorough with his research and entertaining with his writing. Were the legends of vampires inspired by people with tuberculosis? Was the New Jersey Devil real? Why were transorbital lobotomies popular and how did patient's fair? Will definitely give you chills.

^ Lore is now a series based on the podcast on Amazon Prime. Premise is solid, but it's in dire need of some professional voice work.

Finding Drago is an interesting podcast about trying to figure out the author of a fan fiction book about Ivan Drago from Rocky IV.

Re: What is your favorite podcast?

The forming morning team from Good Day LA who helped make Morning TV shows less stuffy... Dorothy, Steve, and Jillian do a weekly podcast that's pretty fun called: "Ok LA: As We Were Saying". It's loose and organic so that's pretty fun.

Steve from the above show also does an interview a show called "Steve Edwards Confessions" that's good.

Re: What is your favorite podcast?

I'm currently listening to To Live and Die in LA

Without giving too much away, it's a true story about the disappearance of Adea Shabani. She's a 25 year old aspiring actress who goes missing last February. It's hosted by journalist Neil Strauss who was contacted by the family of the missing person in hopes that he can raise some awareness on it and help find her. It's a well done pod and the story is told as the events unfold and there are plenty of twists along the way.

Worth a listen, it's a 12 part podcast and they've released 10 episodes so far. Short episodes run about 30-40 minutes. Starts off a little slow but once it gets going, it's hard to stop listening. I'd recommend not Googling anything if you want to be taken along for the ride.

Re: What is your favorite podcast?

I'm noticing lotsa podcasts have issues:

-Too many hosts. anything more than 2 or 3 gets really busy.
-Shitty mic levels... too low or too high. Hosts mic levels not balanced.
-Hosts are preoccupied because they are live tweeting or in a live show chat while recording. So when they come to them there is a stupid pause...then apology for not paying attention.
-Podcast that are waaay too long. I discovered a Game of Thrones podcast that's real good. But it's 3 to 4 hours long. Anything over 90min is too much. Edit that shit down.
-Podcast that spend the last 10-20 minutes of the show giving each host a chance to pimp all the other 12 to 15 podcasts and Twitter accounts they manage.

Re: What is your favorite podcast?

The audio levels are a big issue to me.
the ones that are really bad are when they have one or two people calling in and not actually there for the recording of the podcast.

they always sound bad.

The only one I don’t really hear that with is the Flophouse. One of the guys moved to Cali last year. He does it via FaceTime or Skype and it sounds just fine. Thier isssue is live shows at an event. Audio is all over the place for those shows.

Too many hosts ... yes. There are a few that I listen to that balance this well (Terrible Talkers, Show Me the Meaning, Now Playing, and The Next Picture Show). I completely dumped all the After Buzz programming because it was nothing but a headache inducing raucous table session. (Plus their content was pure recap garbage.)

Audio quality ... hell yes. I’ll dump something permanently if the first few minutes sound like tin can trash. My understanding is a decent setup is not horribly pricey, but you need to put some time into the editing and sound design. If you don’t care to spend time doing that, I don’t care to spend time listening.

Length of the podcast ... I may disagree here. If the conversation is worthwhile, keep going (IMO). Don’t draw it out with shenanigans just because you want a longer show though. Then again, I spend a lot of time driving and will listen to podcasts while working around the house. I listen more than I watch TV anymore.

In my current “auto download” rotation (some of them I am selective with):

/Filmcast and /Film Daily
Alien vs. Predator Galaxy
Apathetic Enthusiasm
Astonishing Legends
Bad Science
Blank Check with Griffin and David
Brilliant Idiots
Cinemaholics
Doughboys
Freakonomics
Grumpy Old Geeks
Hacking Humans

Nerdificent
The Next Picture Show
Not Alone
Now Playing
Penn’s Sunday School
Planet Money
Pop Culture Happy Hour
Science Fiction Film Podcast
Show Me the Meaning
The Spoiler Warning
The Terrible Talkers
The What If? Podcast
Wisecrack’s The Squanch

Supposedly they were working on a movie (or was it a series?) but then all the lawsuits started.
