Pain below ribs when sitting/standing too long in one place...

I'm a fairly active 26-yr old, so I'm no elderly case.

But when I sit in a chair for a few hours or stand for like 20-30 minutes, I get an excrutiating pain below my ribs (and sometime in my back).

Anyone else have this?

Does it mean I'm out of shape, have a leech in me, what!?

Do you happen to have a knife blade imbedded in your midsection? If so, remove it. Problem solved.

No, I am not overweight in the slightest bit.

No, Numanoid, I don't happen to have a knife blade imbedded in my midsection, but thanks for the post, and now you can move along.

Did you skip out on those scoliosis tests in elementary school?

Sounds like you might have a disc issue if the pain is in your back (just reformat, hur). When you say it is "below your ribs" do you mean in your gut area or what?

It's hard to describe -- the pain/discomfort is either "below" my ribs, or "behind" my ribs.

SO you think the ribs and back is related...what does a "disc issue" entail?

Toad:

Because you are already immersed in pain, you probably should not be asking for tips on how to deal with the pain now. Just deal with the pain. I feel like any answer gives you more to think about and makes it more difficult to deal with the pain and to feel as though you are doing the right thing.

You could have a slipped disc in your spine. I have a friend who can't sit very long or sleep on his back because of a slipped/swollen disc. If this is a recurring thing, you should visit your regular doc and have him/her recommend a specialist.

Also, make sure it isn't bone-itis:

I get that too all the time, although I'd describe the pain as minorly 'irritating' instead of 'excrutiating'.

How is your posture? Mine is pretty lousy, and I think I pain comes from putting too much pressure on my stomache muscles.

You know, I bet that's it on the nose b/c my posture SUCKS (I'm a sloucher).

Mine isn't just irritating though -- it's like I'd do anything to get rid of it.

And no, it's not bonitis -- but Bender rules.

I think a good rule of thumb is to get anything that is truely painful checked out as soon as you can. Even if all the doctor can say is 'Stop slouching, you drip", you want to make sure you're not going to wind up with something that's only going to get much worse down the road.

It's been bothering me for years - I just always thought it would go away.

I guess when my insurance kicks in in August, I'll get it checked out.

I just don't want to hear: "dude you should totally go see a chirocrapper and he'll totally like fix ya up man!"

i think i have something like this as well.

it's on my right side right below (an inch or two) my breast. fells like it could be part of my breast plate or sternum. it's a sharp pain that doesn't last long, a few seconds.

the other pain is a dull ache on the back usually on my right side kinda around the kidney area but maybe a few inches upward.

not over weight, and my posture is decent. the second pain mainly happens when sitting at the computer, chair has now backing on it anymore.

I have the same back pain.

I said I'm 'active', but the truth is I'm not as active as I was a few years ago when I was an athlete --- but I can't recall whether I had this "thing" then or not.

To me, it almost feels like it's because my stomach muscles aren't as strong... seem possible?

this is kind of creepy...i've been bothered by the same exact pain...same place and everything...for the last few months on and off. it's definately muscular, and it's definately related to bad posture. i'm a total 'slouch' over the computer, and that aggravates it immensely. activity for the most part alleviates it. It's the intercostal muscles in your ribs that are strained from being pinched...and they are all attached to your back muscles which are similarly strained from extended periods in bad positions.

i'm not a doctor...but that's my self-diagnosis. Mine appears to be somewhat stress related as well....i.e., my stress level has decreased of late and so has the pain.

Re: Pain below ribs when sitting/standing too long in one place...

It could be a clogged fart. Usually when sitting down for a long time the fart is about to come out, then when you stand up it travels back up.

Re: Pain below ribs when sitting/standing too long in one place...

Hmmm. I have had similar symptoms. To this day, under my left moob is slightly tender. Pressure around neck. Occasional minor chest pinching. I asked the doctor and he says don't worry about it and I'm bound to die some day anyways.

Here are two conditions that toy with and give me symptoms to ignore...

1. Acid reflux - that shit is real. If the acid doesn't come up too far, you don't get heartburn. But it's still brewing down below. It causes all kinds of kooky muscle and nerve activity from the stomach to the neck. I used to get really bad heartburn, but dropped some weight and it disappeared. But it's still brewing down below.

2. Very minor hernia. I have a slipping hernia. It goes back and forth. Similar to the acid reflux, it causes minor problems that I'm best off ignoring. Doctor says it's small and not worth fixing.

I was worried about heart health, so I took it as far as a cardiologist and had a nuclear stress test and holter monitor done last week. The result is that I'm looking good. 67% heart activity (73% is 100%, 50% is bad). Average BPM of 82. Feels like kind of a waste. But it was neat to see inside there. I'm going to exercise like crazy and go back in a year and see what it looks like.

Damnit. Just saw this thread in 12 years old. Toad is probably long dead and gone. Shouldn't have ignored those symptoms. RIP dude.

Maybe it's a cracked rib that never healed properly.

Have to laugh that the first post of this user is a quote from a 12 year old thread.

If it did, dude suffered for a few more years at least. Last activity was 2012.
